Principal's message

Dear MGSC School Community

How wonderful it is to have the Year 8 to 10 students onsite here with us again. It was great to hear the sound of laughter and chatter as I walked around the school over these last few days. If any of us (staff or students) had taken school for granted then this has certainly changed.  What may have been seen as a routine activity five days a week is now a real treat.

Whilst we all managed to maintain our connection with each other online, there is nothing like being able to see each other face-to-face. I would like to acknowledge the investment of thought, compassion and collaboration on both sides of the educational fence. Our staff have continued to support our students both educationally and socially through this unique period. Our students have grown as independent learners who are resourceful and innovative in their approach to their studies. The bar has been set very high by all and we will continue to rise up to meet and exceed what we have achieved to date in relation to building of community spirit.

Last Thursday we farewelled the Year 12 students. They came to school in costumes and the Captains, Isla, Ailish and Ava had a final live broadcast to their peers in the last 30 minutes of period 4. There were tears and laughter as they reminisced about their years together at MGSC. As always, they were confident, compassionate and spirited in their delivery. I can’t thank them enough for their leadership of the students this year, through what has been an extraordinarily challenging time.

Last week we held the Annual VCE Art Show and the judging was held online for the first time. I would like to acknowledge the sponsorship and support of Barry Plant Real Estate Mordialloc once again. Even though all businesses have been affected in some way by the lockdown from the Covid-19 pandemic, Eva Cumming did not hesitate to continue to support our school financially. We also had a guest judge, artist and teacher, Zoe Keystone, and I thank her to joining us on the day. The calibre of work was outstanding and it was difficult for us to make a decision. But as the saying goes, “there can be only one” and we ultimately awarded the prizes in the area of Media, Art and Visual Communication and Design and the overall winner to worthy students. The event was online last week and I hope you were able to view it.

As you would be aware, this year were are unable to hold the annual Year 12 Formal or Valedictory Dinner but in its place we have a VCE Graduation Ceremony. I give my sincere thanks to our Director of Senior School, Sylvia Christopoulos, Year 12 Student Managers, Clare Selir and Tess Molina, Assistant Principal, Carol Duggan and our Careers Advisor, Karen Garton for the important role they have played throughout the year in the support of our Year 12 students. You will hear from each of them on the broadcast.

Of course, our School Captains, Ailish and Ava and our SRC Captain, Isla, spoke splendidly and eloquently. The VCE Graduation Ceremony will be released later in the week so that our families are able to celebrate together. I look forward to reminiscing over the past 6 years of our Year 12 students’ time with us and acknowledge the awards for the top students in each of their studies.

I hope you are all enjoying engaging with family and friends that you have not seen in person for some time.

All the best

Linda Brown
