Hoodie Up Day

Hoodie Up Day

Rachael Gemmill, Inclusion Support Manager

At Glen Education we are passionate about advocacy! So when one of our amazing educators, Rochelle Ancora, Glen Centre Rd Kindergarten, suggested we Hoodie Up for Autism Awareness, of course we jumped at the opportunity!

Children and Educators across Glen Education were invited to wear a hoodie during the week of Monday 4th April – 8th April and make a GOLD COIN donation for Autism Awareness.

Our community truly rallied and raised $574.35 for Amaze through gold coin donations!

This is an amazing effort, and we want to thank our wonderful children, families, and educators for this incredible show of community spirit

Did you know …

1 in 100 Australians is on the Autism spectrum, with many more undiagnosed. Creating awareness can help us have conversations about how to support and understand how different people think and how we can all do things in own ways. Everyone is unique and as educators in early childhood we want every child to learn how to embrace differences and “Dare to be yourself”.

Why hoodies?

Some people with autism experience sensory sensitivities and can become overloaded by stimuli in their environment. Wearing their hoodie up means they can block out bright lights and busy environments which helps calm them. Some people with autism repeat behaviours or movements to keep themselves calm, fidget, rock or talk to themselves to help ease their anxiety. Being aware of these types of behaviours and showing a little understanding and kindness goes a long way.
