A Farewell

BY DARRYL THOMPSON (MUSIC TEACHER)

If I asked the current BHCS community, from staff, parents, the Board or the students who is the longest-serving member of staff, I reckon I could count on my left hand the number of people who would answer David Bremner. Who's that, you say? Ask the scores of piano students David has tutored in the nineteen or so years he's worked here. When he told me that he is finishing up this term, I asked him to put down some thoughts about his time here, so this is his story. I'm sure you'll join me in thanking him for his patient and encouraging approach and his consistent presence here. He will be greatly missed.

WORDS FROM DAVID

When I started teaching at BHCS in 2003 the only current building was the Junior School Building. In addition, there were two small, old halls that were used for classrooms, a concrete dormitory that was the art room, and a glass and fibro church building that was used for assembly, where I also taught piano.

I remember occasions when the church forgot to refill the gas bottles and so the heater did not work. Sometimes it was colder inside than outside, which wasn’t conducive for nimble fingers on the keyboard!

Apart from Lance Davidson, Bec Burton and Juliette Krens I think I am the longest serving staff member. Bec and Juliette were the receptionists, office staff, support staff, principal’s PA etc etc, even back then.

I have made the decision to take early retirement at the end of this term to become a full-time carer for my wife who has Alzheimer’s disease.

It will be a very different lifestyle, but I am at peace that it is the right thing for me to do at this point in our lives. I have really enjoyed being part of the BHCS community and I will miss all the students, staff and parents.

I believe that God made us all musical. You only have to listen to your heartbeat to hear your inner rhythm. I have enjoyed having the opportunity to help develop that gift in so many students.

It is my prayer that they might go on to use their abilities for God’s glory.

With heartfelt thanks for your support and care.
