A LEGO Master Visits BHCS

BY JANET NYHOUSE (COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT MANAGER)

Most of our school community is aware that Mr Dickson was the co-winner of a national LEGO Robotics Competition last year, winning various LEGO Robotics kits for school and having the title of LEGO Education Brand Ambassador for 2022.

On Tuesday, his co-Ambassador - Ryan Evans - came to BHCS to see how we do Robotics across the school. You might remember Ryan from the 2021 season of LEGO Masters where he and his partner Gabby finished as runners up with their amazing animated circus,  colorful rainbow-paint truck and dramatic family holiday builds.

While at BHCS, Ryan had the chance to sit in with some of the Year 9/10 STEM-botics elective students as they worked with EV3, see the variety of robotic platforms offered in the Junior School and even chat with a past winner of our very own BHCS LEGO Master Competition. Josiah said that he really learned a lot from meeting with Ryan. Who knows... maybe one day we will see Josiah holding up the LEGO Masters' Trophy?

Worms, Bus Bingo & Easter Fun!

Wow!! It's hard to believe that it's almost the end of Term One. What a fabulous, jam-packed term it has been. And our last week of term one is not different. On Monday we worked together to make a bed for our newest members of Team Kinder, composting worms. First, we needed to clean the worm farm before we added some shredded paper (bedding) for the worms to live in at the bedroom level. Next, we added some fruit skins from our morning snack to their kitchen level, but we had to make sure that we cut them smaller, as worms don't have very big mouths, as we do our part to reduce waste in Kinder.

On Wednesday our youngest Kinder students enjoyed eating hot cross buns as they listened to the Easter story and were very excited to take home their Three-Year-Old "Kinder kit" provided by the Department of Education and Training.

Today you could almost taste the excitement in the air at Kinder drop off, as today was our first Kinder excursion for the year, when we got to go on the very exciting SCHOOL BUS!!! The majority of our Kinder students have never been on a bus, especially a bus where we get to play "bus bingo" that is followed by a babycino in the school restaurant!!

The shouts of excitement on the bus were so wide and varied from

"I saw a dead wombat", "I live on that street", "I've been here before" and such a pleasure to here and be part of.

Tomorrow, on our last day of the term, we will be making Easter crosses from sticks, flowers and leaves that we've collected in our garden, as part of our Kinder Easter Festival and celebrate Jesus rising from the dead.

We at Team Kinder wish you wonderful Easter celebrations and are looking forward to seeing you in Term Two.

Young Citizen of the Year

Deputy Mayor and Lyster Ward Councillor, Cr Johanna Skelton joined us for our Senior School assembly this week to re-present an Australia Day award to our Year 9 student Harry Bruce-Tennant.

Harry's incredible heart to share hope with community after storm-damage affected so many local family homes in 2021 (including his own), has been recognised and commended! The Hope Bracelet project has been an outstanding effort, bringing hope and connection to many people.

Well done, Harry!

TREETOP ADVENTURES

BY BRONWYN MAIDMENT (SECONDARY TEACHER)

On Friday our Year 9s took part in their last activity of our ‘challenge’ themed term. We journeyed to ‘Treetops Adventure’ in the picturesque landscape of our own beautiful Belgrave. The morning began with a briefing from the awesome Treetops staff, before students harnessed up and made their way through high ropes courses of varying difficulties.

For some students their fear of heights was challenged and conquered, with everyone showing incredible teamwork and determination. Congratulations to our awesome Year 9s who have been tested and pushed to their personal limits this term. You have shown perseverance, courage and leadership!

Twilight Tours - A wonderful evening for visitors!

BY JANET NYHOUSE (COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT MANAGER)

We welcomed over 200 visitors through the gates of BHCS last Thursday afternoon and invited them to enjoy a taste of our beautiful school. Our Senior and Middle school student representatives did a stellar job of leading our tour groups through classrooms, playgrounds and facilities.  They each spoke with confidence about their own experience here at BHCS and introduced our guests to as many teaching staff as possible along their tour. Thank you to each one of these generous and enthusiastic students.

A massive shout out to our parent volunteers who faithfully served at the BBQ for this event.  It was WONDERFUL to have you on-site, and your joy-filled faces and conversation truly complimented the story our guests were experiencing. (The snags were pretty awesome too!)

Next term, we look forward to inviting more visitors through our school to "Tour with our Principal" as a regular event. If you have friends or family who would like to take a closer look at BHCS, please share this invitation with them.
