Magis report

What a week it has been!

Round three of WADL Debating continued via the Zoom platform on Tuesday evening. John XXIII won three of our six debates – with two debates having been lost by only half a point!!! All teams performed admirably, and I congratulate all our debaters on an outstanding effort. Due to COVID-related absences, the Year 12 team debate against Duncraig SHS was postponed. We are looking at rescheduling this round for later in the term. Further information to follow. As always, I would like to thank Ms Lumley and Sr Tess for their assistance with managing the debating teams, and to College alumni Rory Hewson, Charlie Richards, and Ben Linsten for their expert coaching.

Round 4 fixtures can be accessed via Teams. Junior and Senior team debates will continue as impromptu, whilst the Novice teams will be debating on the topic of cloning humans. We are sure to hear some very interesting arguments being made on this topic. All teams are reminded that they must check the WA Debating League website for up-to-date fixtures in the week prior to each debate - as particularly in this COVID era, changes could be made to the original fixture. I also refer students to their respective Teams pages for information pertaining to training and preparation sessions in the lead up to Round 4.

Pictured above are some of the participants in this week’s heats of the House Public Speaking Championship. The last of the heats took place on Monday and Wednesday. I congratulate all students who participated in the heats in weeks 1 and 2 of this term. The standard was very high - with a few students drawing for place positions. The senior school members of the Magis Committee did a wonderful job chairing and adjudicating the heats. Special thanks also to Ms Dawson and Ms Gray for assisting. The top three speakers from each year group will compete in the grand final on Tuesday 10 May at 6:30pm in the GBLT. Grand finalists have been notified.

A lot of fun was had in Drone Club and in Dungeons and Dragons Club this week! If you are interested in finding out more about these two clubs or would like to get involved – please speak with Club Coordinator Mr Connellan for more information. D&D has room for more players. Campaigns are held after school in B Block.

Years 7 and 8 Magis elective students will be taking part in the Ethics Olympiad challenge in classes next week – and we wish them all the best in their class debates.

You can keep up to date with Magis and Altiora events by following the Term 2 calendar – which can be accessed by clicking on the link below.

Best of luck to our Public Speaking grand finalists for Tuesday night; our Year 12 students who are attending the National Constitutional Convention on Tuesday and Wednesday; and to those students who will embarking on another exciting Dungeons and Dragons campaign. To everyone – hope you have a happy and successful week.
