Learn what opportunities our students have been taking on

Year 9 Outdoor Education

Our Year 9 Outdoor Education students explored the magical surroundings of Horsham, camping at Mr Arapiles, before Rock Climbing, then making the trip to Rocklands to enjoy the picturesque view as they canoed on the lake.

Year 11 Drama Excursion

On 8 March, our Year 11 VCE Drama students enthusiastically attended 'Stardust' and 'The Mission' at the Horsham Town Hall. The performance was a 'double-bill', which meant we were fortunate to see two separate shows in the one evening!

'Stardust' told the story of bandleader and trumpet player, Col Brain. Before he died, Col placed his most prized life possessions into a cupboard and locked it up, never to be opened again. But what was inside? Told through the eyes of his grandson, award winning ABC presenter & performer, Joel Carnegie, herein lies the discovery of a time capsule of Australian musical life, in a heart-warming quest to uncover what Col wanted us to know about his life by the things he left behind. Students were mesmerised by Joel's transformative skills, as well as the superb use of our very own Horsham Brass Band.

Following a short interval, 'The Mission' traverses the journey of “Fighting Gunditjmara” man, Allan McDonald – one of the first Aboriginal soldiers from Victoria to enlist for war. He fought at Gallipoli and Beersheba, only to be denied a soldier’s settlement on his ultimate return to Australia and forced from his land at the Lake Condah Mission. This captivating and rollicking story, told by his great, great nephew, Gunditjmara man Tom Molyneux, told the truth of Uncle Allan’s struggle; fighting for Country, for love, and for justice.

The students' reaction to both performances was impressive, engaging emotionally and thoughtfully with both productions. A real highlight of the evening occurred afterwards when Joel and Tom came out to speak with the students and to answer any questions they had about their work. It was a fantastic evening of live theatre with a terrific group of students.

VCE Business Management

Last week our VCE Business Management class were fortunate to have a guest speaker who is also a past student of this very class, Taylor Whitworth from Harcourts Horsham.

Taylor spoke to the students about the entrepreneurial skills required to be successful in the game. He talked about how he cracked into the real estate market, the day-to-day operations, training, employee motivation, keeping up to date with the newest technologies and how it's important to research and think outside the square. Taylor also discussed how important it was to be part of the positive corporate culture at Harcourts and how it drives employee happiness and satisfaction.

Many thanks to Taylor for joining us and to Harcourts!

Year 11 Drama - Macbeth

Our annual dive into Shakespeare has begun in earnest in 2022! Students have really embraced 'The Bard' this year, taking on the various roles in 'Macbeth' with gusto. Miss Brack and Mrs Thomas have been very impressed by the enthusiasm shown by both classes - despite the tragic end of some of our prop swords due to some heavy commitment to character! Well done, Year 11 English!

Donations for St Vincent de Paul

Whilst other students were at VET on Wednesday, the remainder of Mrs Van Dyk's Religious Education class have been completing the dressing gowns that were unable to be finished during COVID last year.  They will be donated to St Vincent de Paul.

VET In Action

This week Mrs Bird went adventuring to see some of our Vocational Education and Training (VET) students in action.

Derek is working on 3D animations of an object to be placed within a game (Screen & Media). Ryan, Brodie, Katrina, Nadia, Jake and Levi were creating an Italian feast (Kitchen Operations). Francine and Bethany were setting up to provide a performance at lunchtime (Music).

VET provides students with workplace skills and technical knowledge to give them a head start on a qualification - which is a great way to fast-track progress towards a rewarding career.
