Junior School News

Term 1 2022

What a wonderful start to the year we have all had during Term 1. Year 8 and 9 students returned to school in their new year levels and classes, forging new connections with peers and teachers they may not have had last year, whilst Year 7 students began their journey at Greensborough College forming new connections every day.

Throughout the term, the students have enjoyed exploring their new general purpose classrooms, Science Labs, open learning spaces and Library. They have been out on Interschool Sport and enhanced their knowledge in new subjects they may not have previously studied.

During the term we acknowledge our 2022 Year 7 Scholarship Recipients and our 2022 Junior School Student Leaders.

Students are rewarded merits for displaying school pride, academic excellence, school values and participating in extra-curricular activities. Please see below a list of the top merit recipients for Term 1 in the Junior School.

At the beginning of Term 2, we will be introducing the Positive Merit Exchange where students will be able to exchange their merits for a range of different items including sporting equipment, canteen vouchers, accessories for the school uniform, stationery items and much more.

At Greensborough College we believe daily attendance is important so students don’t fall behind socially and developmentally. When young people regularly attend school and complete Year 12 or attain an equivalent qualification they have better health and employment outcomes and generally can access higher incomes across their lives. We believe that 'every minute, every lesson and every day' counts.

At Greensborough College we have a 95% attendance requirement for all students. If a student is going to be absent we ask that you contact the school through the Compass portal or the absence line.

An acceptable reason for absence is illness. We ask if your child is unwell, that you please visit a GP and obtain a medical certificate to be supplied to the general office so this absence can be recorded as DET approved.

Holidays and birthdays impact on attendance and achievement attainment. If for any reason your child will be absent for a holiday, we ask that you please put this in writing to the College Principal, Pauline Barker, for approval. Once received your child’s Year Level Leader will be contacted to arrange an Absence Learning Plan with work for them to complete during the absence to ensure they stay up to date with the work set in their classes.

Please note, all absences are monitored and followed up, with DET involvement if absence is chronic.

Wishing you all a safe, happy and relaxing term break. I hope you take the time to reflect on your achievements from Term 1 and set new goals to work on in Term 2, as well as taking time out to relax with your family and friends after a busy term.

Year 7

Term 1 always brings with it new beginnings. And none more so than our Year 7 students who have finally begun the momentous task of starting their high school journey.

Unlike last year, this one began with a sense of optimism. The students have been grateful and enthusiastic to be back on-site. Remote learning already feels like a distant memory and the students are focused on making new friends and memories back here at school.

The Year 7s have impressed me immensely with their strength and resilience in adapting to all the changes surrounding the start of high school. Speaking with some Year 7 students today and reflecting on how their first term has gone, each of them has said that they feel they have done well, and that high school already feels normal for them. It was also fantastic to see how enthusiastic all of our Year 7s were in participating in our Athletics and Swimming Carnivals this term and supporting their school house (Go Sharks!!!).

I know that we are all keen for a well-deserved Easter holiday after our first full term since 2019. Rest up and we will see you all back for an exciting Term 2.

Year 8

After the seemingly never ending winding road of remote learning it has been great to see the Year 8’s return with such effervescence and energy. It has been a pleasure to get to know more of the students of this fantastic cohort in my first year as Level leader at GSC.

Each class in Year 8 has continued to develop their own unique dynamic, with a sense of comradery becoming apparent in each class. We have many plans in place to further build this dynamic throughout the 2022 year.

The students have actively reengaged in the extra curricular programme with a number of Year 8’s auditioning for the school musical, offering their time to help on Explore Night as well as being active participants in the School athletics and swimming days.

Each Year 8 student should be proud of their achievements in what has been the longest term since 2019. It is most definitely time to enjoy a well deserved break and come back fully charged for Term 2.

Year 9

It has been a great start to the new year and phenomenal to see our students return to school. It has been fantastic to open our new buildings to students, inviting students into new learning spaces. Our return to school was marked with the Swimming Carnival, which offered excitement and a positive competitive spirit for the cohort.

With students starting their third year of school, many are starting to think about their futures and the skills and subjects’ students want to focus on over the next few years. To support this process, this term the Year 9s participated in Morrisby Testing, learning more about themselves, their abilities, interests, and aspirations to help them discover potential future careers and orient themselves towards achieving these goals.

Towards the end of term, we ran our Athletic Carnival and were blessed with great weather for the day. It was awesome to see such great participation across many of the events, and I’m especially proud of the students who stepped out of their comfort zone to try activities they would usually avoid.

I have been impressed with the efforts displayed by the Year 9s this term. There have been challenges over the past few years, but everyone has demonstrated great resilience.

Thank you for a positive start to 2022 and I look forward to seeing you all again in Term 2 – but for now, let’s kick back and unwind and enjoy your break, everyone!
