Library News

It is time to come in and find your holiday reading in the Library or on SORA!

Come in this week and borrow a book.  If you would like to explore our E-collection,  below is a new way to access our SORA e-collection.

World Water Day 2022

This week, the library is celebrating World Water Day 2022. The focus for the 2022 celebration is groundwater.

“Out of sight, under our feet, groundwater is a hidden treasure that enriches our lives. Almost all of the liquid freshwater in the world is groundwater. As climate change gets worse, groundwater will become more and more critical.  We need to work together to sustainably manage this precious resource. Groundwater may be out of sight, but it must not be out of mind.”

The United Nations (UN) launched a special report to coincide with this year’s World Water Day. The UN reminds us that although groundwater is invisible, its impact is visible everywhere.

Library Displays

These continue to be a focus and the latest ones are on Cars and Bikes and also the Premier’s Reading Challenge.

Classroom Visits

Our teacher-librarians, Ms Laird and Mrs Barrett have visited Year 7 and 8 English classes. We are focusing on upskilling our students in searching our library using our special Accelerated Reader Search page.

We are demonstrating how to search the catalogue by choosing different combinations of search strategies depending upon each student’s need. With each new step we demonstrate, we give the students the time to explore and practice using their new skills.  By the end of the session, students have successfully selected and written down the titles of four books and where to find them next time they visit the library. We have really enjoyed these lessons. It is wonderful to see each student’s searching skills growing and improving.

The Premier’s Reading Challenge K-10

It’s on again! The Premier’s Reading Challenge K-10 opened on Monday 28 February and closes on Friday 19 August. English Leader of Learning, Mrs Burke, is coordinating the Challenge and we are working closely with her to support our students' reading needs.

We are very keen to hear from our students what they are reading and what they would like to read next.  We are happy to receive requests.  We are always available for a friendly chat about books and encourage our students to come and chat with us.

Finding books on the Premier’s Reading Challenge Reading Lists is easy!

We have a display of books in the Premier’s Reading Challenge and also in the Accelerated Reader program. We also have our catalogue set up to make the Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) aligned books easy to find. To see what is in our current collection, students can log in from school or home and browse or search the dedicated PRC reading lists. These lists enable easier searching for our students.

This search below takes you from the Library homepage to the Reading Lists Page. By following these steps, students are taken directly to McCarthy Library’s available Premier’s Reading Challenge 2022 books and e-books.

Wishing everyone a happy holiday and looking forward to seeing our students back next term.
