Dear Students, Parents, Carers and Families,

Numeracy in Year 1 and 2

In the junior school they have been very busy thinking about numbers using counting materials and MAB. The students have been putting  their numbers in  place value columns and know all about hundreds and thousands.

In their classrooms they have learnt to expand and order numbers. When skip counting they have learnt to count by twos, fives and tens and are able to count forwards and backwards.

The Year one and two students are become counting detectives and are learning to identify one more and one less, and ten more and ten less. They love using materials like MAB, blocks, abacus, counters, arrays or ten frames, when working with numbers. These are some comments from our young mathematicians:

I have learnt to skip count by 2’s.  Hannah 1VL7

I have learnt with MAB to make my name. Steffy 1VL7

If I have one more my number gets bigger. Mason 1VL7

I can count backwards and forwards. Steffan 1R6

I learnt about tens and ones and we use them to count. Aisha 1VL7

I find maths fun and exciting! Evelyn 1VL7

We are counting backwards and forwards in patterns. Amy 2F12

We have a counting club in Year 2. Chelsea 2F12

We are making numbers with MAB, for 27 we have 2 tens and 7 ones. Cooper 2F12
