Environment Group News

Ms Kathryn Badini

On Sunday, 28 February, we travelled to Wurtulla Beach on the Sunshine Coast to participate in Clean Up Australia Day. Fifty students spent the morning cleaning the beach; this included the La Valla Year 7 Boarding boys plus students from Years 8 – 12. While at first, it seemed that we wouldn’t find anything, the boys quickly started to fill their buckets with bottles, cans, cigarette buds and soft plastic packaging. Usually, on a beach clean, Sunshine Coast City Council would collect 10kg of rubbish, but our boys collected 38kg – an outstanding effort!

Afterwards, the boys were given some time to enjoy the beach, playing beach games and having a swim. It was a fantastic day out and another reminder about taking care of our environment so that we can truly enjoy it.

The Environment Group would like to thank Tim and Camilla Sedgwick, Catherine Ball, Shaun Wiggins and Anne Quill for their support of the day and all the boys who got involved.

This Friday is the official Schools’ Clean Up Australia Day, and we have a whole host of activities happening –

  • From 7:45 am there will be an Ewaste drive at the podium. Students can deposit any old or broken electronics for proper recycling – mobile phones, cords, batteries, or any electrical devices etc.
  • Break 1. A special effort to help clean up our own yard.
  • 3:30 pm – 4:45 pm Clean Up of the Creek. This event is mainly for Primary students, but if your child would like to get involved, please email Ms Badini at badinik@marash.qld.edu.au

The Environment Group meets every Day 9, Break 1B in Room 207. All students are welcome to attend.
