Year Advisers Reports -

     Years 8, 10 & 12

Year 8

Well done to Year 8 on a great start to 2021! Year 8 has seen some changes with leaving middle school but also new subjects to the school – Applied Learning & Wellbeing. Overall, I am hearing lots of positive reports on the enthusiasm and commitment to their studies. The highlight for me each week is celebrating this fantastic behaviour with the Henry Hero’s, congratulations to all our winners in Term 1.

Term 2 is looking to being a very busy term with the following events on:

  • Cross Country - Wednesday 21 April
  • Athletic Carnival - Friday 7 May
  • Year 8 Camp - Monday 10 May to Wednesday 12 May
  • High Resolves - Thursday 17 June
  • Welfare Day - Thursday 24 June

Along with all these events, Year 8 also will have assessments due for all their subjects. With lots on and plenty of work to do, it is important for Year 8 to planned ahead.

Tips for assessment tasks/homework:

  • Have a planner (there is an example on Google Classroom you can use).
  • Make 'to-do' lists to spread out the workload.
  • Get into a routine of doing homework at a set time, ideally a little each day.
  • If possible have a set place where you can do your work at home.
  • Turn mobiles to 'aeroplane mode' or off so there are no disruptions.
  • Start assignments as soon as you receive them.
  • Contact your class teacher if you have any questions.

The Year 8 Camp will be held at The Great Aussie Bush Camp on Monday 10 to Wednesday 12 May 2021. This camp is a rescheduled event that was to take place in 2020 when students were in Year 7.

Year 10

Term 1 is officially in the books and Year 10 students should be very proud of themselves! The past couple of weeks in particular have seen may students sit and submit multiple assessment tasks across their subject areas, this is never easy and all students should be congratulated on their efforts.

Week 7 saw Year 10 students participate in the Love Bites program presented by Coast Shelter. This program addressed some pretty tough topics such as domestic violence and respectful relationships.  The feedback from presenters of this course was that they were blown away with the maturity of our students and even more-so impressed with the thoughtful contributions our students gave during their sessions.  Well done to all!

The results of our senior jacket poll are in and I’m excited to announce that the new black and gold design has won and will be implemented by our lovely year group next year.  This new design will set the trend for the year groups to follow in this new jacket era.  Final design changes are being made by our Jacket Committee and I’m very confident we’re all going to look pretty spiffy as we sport these new jackets next year.  Ordering will take place in Term 2.

Our Year 10 Dinner Dance has been officially booked in for Monday 13 December at The Entertainment Grounds, Gosford. Lock it in your calendar everyone as it is sure to be fantastic celebrating the completion of junior school at Henry Kendall High School.

Finally, I want to wish all of our students and their families a fun and relaxing break and I’ll see you all next term!

Year 12

Year 12 students have finished the term with a flurry of assessment tasks which sees them about half way through their HSC courses. The holidays will come as a welcome break but it is not the time to take the foot off the pedal! Whilst relaxation and refreshing are important, students need to keep up their work habits and complete holiday work set by their teachers (hopefully not too much though!). This is particularly important for students of practical courses who need to be working to a strict schedule to ensure projects are submitted on time without the need for all-nighters later in the year!

The NESA website provides information about important upcoming dates.

Camp was a great way to start the year and everyone had a terrific time while fulfilling ‘Life Ready’ requirements. Students also had some advice on preparation for the HSC with ‘Elevate’.

Year 12 students have been very active in sporting teams with quite a few making it past the first round!

Brandon and Caitlin made it to the Regional Final of Lions Youth of the Year and did a fantastic job, with Brandon being successful and moving on to the next round.

Our school leaders, Captains and Prefects have been very active and doing an amazing job of leading the student body.

As well as working hard I hope all Year 12 students take the opportunity to involve themselves in school activities for their final two terms at Henry Kendall High School. There will be carnivals, fundraising BBQ’s, students vs teachers matches – all of the things that make the end of school memorable and enjoyable. The time will go very quickly so I encourage students to make the most of their last two terms at HKHS.

Hoping everyone has a safe and relaxing holiday.
