Term 1 has been an exciting term for the students at Henry Kendall High School. We have welcomed Year 7 into the theory and practical component of PDHPE and continued to focus on a wide range of health issues that affect young people at HKHS.

Throughout Term 1, Year 7 have been studying the unit Change. This unit helps students reflect on personal challenges they may have when transitioning from primary school to high school. Students have been able to identify the barriers to identifying unsafe situations as well as their thoughts and feelings as a result of change.

Year 8 have been studying the unit on What Makes You Tick. This unit has helped students understand the guidelines for physical activity, nutrition and sleep. Students have been able to compare their current lifestyle patterns to the standards set out by the Australian Government.

Year 9 have been looking at the unit Moving and Feeling Good. This unit has explored the issues of individual health plans as well as the cultural significance of sport in Australia. Students have researched health campaigns that are currently available and investigated how they can be applied to their life.

Year 10 students' main focus has been Discrimination and Diversity. Students have watched the film The Final Quarter. This film explores the life of the 2014 Australian of the Year, Adam Goodes, and the issues he faced in the final years of his playing career. Students have also had the opportunity to explore their own identity and how it has developed throughout their high school years.

PASS students have been learning about nutrition in sport. Students have examined a wide range of athletes and the various diets associated with different sports. Students have been able to reflect on the sports they play and analyse types of food that would be most beneficial for them.

Child Studies students have developed an understanding of the factors that influence an individual’s decision to become a parent and planning considerations that may take place. Students also explore the various parenting styles and the qualities of an effective parenting process. Mr Hoole and Miss Quitadamo have been working with the students to share a deep insight into parenting.

SYDNEY NORTH SCHOOL SPORT

Sydney North Knockouts recommenced this term with the following teams having played:

Open Boys Cricket vs Narara Valley High School (win 129-55). Thanks to Mr Lawler for his knowledge and expertise in this area.

Open Boys Football vs Northlakes High School (win 10-0). Thanks to Mr Hoole for coaching and good luck against Terrigal in the next round.

Open Boys Basketball vs Erina High School (win 47-28) however, in Round 2, the Open Boys lost narrowly to Wadalba High School.

We look forward to hearing future results from our Henry Kendall students in theTerm 2 Sydney North Knockouts.

SYDNEY NORTH SWIMMING CARNIVAL

Congratulations to Skye Regan, Jade Sweeney, Natarsha Grimley and Haylie Green for finishing 6th in the Under 17’s 4 x 50m relay at the Sydney North Swimming Championships at Homebush. This is a fantastic effort by all students.

BOYS SOCCER - 12 March

Congratulations Open Boys Football team on your win.

The Open Boys Football team played Northlakes High School on Friday 12 March. The boys began the game strongly and had a variety of chances to take the lead, however, some rushed attempts on goal meant it was scoreless for the opening portion of the game.

After 15 minutes the scoring was opened by Kyle Dowling after getting on the end of a beautiful pass from Cameron Kop-Conrow. From that moment onwards it was one way traffic and the boys went into a 4-0 half-time lead.

In the second half, the boys continued to play some fantastic football with majority of the team getting on the score sheet. With five minutes to go and incredible piece of skill from Harrison Day to get his second half hat trick, put the cherry on top of the cake. Harrison executed an audacious bicycle kick from 30 metres into the top corner and it will go down as one of the best goals ever scored at school level football. The score finished a resounding

10-0 to the HKHS boys.

GIRLS TOUCH FOOTBALL

Congratulations Open Girls Touch Football Team!

The Open Girls Touch Footy Team played Chatswood High School to begin our Combined High Schools knockout campaign. Lead expertly by Year 12 students and co-captains Brianna Irvine and Clare Norris, the HKHS side was primarily made up of young up-and-comers from Years 8 and 9. Right from the warm-up they looked fit, fast, and focused.

The start of the game was tight and frenetic, and after five minutes the score was locked at 2-2. However, some creative play-making from Brianna, and three amazing tries from Tehya “Twinkle Toes” Sweeney, meant that HKHS had a commanding lead at half time. From there the girls didn't look back. The final score was 10-3 and we are extremely excited to move into the next round.

Congratulations to coach's Player of the Match Khyra Dickey for her committed drives down the field, and a big shout-out to Ashlyn Hyland who put her body on the line with some epic diving, and ended up with astro-turf burns for her effort.

Well done to the whole team for an outstanding effort both on and off the field. Can’t wait for the next one!

BOYS BASKETBALL

On Friday 5 March the Open Boys Basketball Team “Th e Oilers” played their first round of the 2021 knockout competition against Erina High School. 24 students attended try-outs for the team which made selecting only ten students quite challenging. The students selected brought a variety of skills to the court and all have experience in playing basketball in local competitions. The team had multiple training sessions prior to the match and entered the first match with a game plan in mind.

During the first quarter both teams showed their nerves, missing a few shots and rushing the ball. We began to settle and scored our first points to get our game started. Our communication was excellent and we started to identify where the strengths and weaknesses of the Erina team were. At the completion of the first quarter, both teams were locked at 4-4.

We started the second quarter with two goals, control the pace of the game and play the attacking game we had practised. The team immediately began to find their groove and we began adding points. Cooper McElroy was impressive in attack and added to our lead with some successful free throws. Erina played well in this quarter and matched us most of the way throughout the quarter. We reached half time leading 18-16 with plenty left to do.

With the new quarter came a new goal, tighten up our defence and force Erina to take risks in attack. The team did an excellent job, in particular, team captain Janai Michel was dominant and lead the team to a successful quarter. Erina were kept scoreless whilst HKHS extended their lead. The third quarter finished with HKHS in the lead 28-16.

We began the final quarter with the intention of playing our best for the remaining 10 minutes. We wanted to extend our lead and ensure we defended as well as we did early in the game. With a few 3-point shots from Malakai Wolfgramm our momentum continued to build. The team played extremely well and ended up winning 47-28 against a strong Erina High School Team.

GIRLS NETBALL

On Wednesday 17 March, the Open Girls and U15 Girls netball teams played their first round knockout game against Wyong High School. Both teams played extremely well; the Open team played under some challenging conditions and were defeated.

The U15's played together as a team for the first time, winning with a convincing final score or 34-26. The U15's team advances to Round 2.

GIRLS NETBALL

The Open Girls Netball team played Wyong High School at Niagara Park Stadium on Wednesday 17 March. Despite a strong start the team were overcome by some very strong defence in the second half. Injuries caused some issues which meant we had to draw on two players from the 15’s team – Lucy Peck and Hayley Norris – and they acquitted themselves very well.

Standouts for the team were Claire Norris and Brianna Irvine, both of whom have played in school teams since Year 7 and always play with skill, athleticism and heart!

BOYS CRICKET

Congratulations to the HKHS Open Boys Cricket on their win!

The Open Boys Cricket Team played Narara Valley High School on Thursday 11 March at Carrington Oval. HKHS Captain, Jordan Sibley, won the toss and elected to bat first.

The team scored 129 runs from 32 overs. Our top batsmen were Yug Patel who scored a 50 and Jordan Sibley who reached 29.

In the field and with the ball, is where HKHS really shined. Jordan Sibley bowled a very fiery opening spell and finished with figures of 5-19. Felix Tebbutt and Lachlan Knowles also bowled well, each getting a few wickets between them. The fielding and catching was of a very high standard indeed. Narara Valley were eventually scuttled quite cheaply, being all out for 55 runs.

The game was played in good spirits and all the boys should be very proud of their efforts. There will be another game/round at some point and best of luck to the boys in the future.

BOYS SOCCER - 1 April

The Open Boys Football team played Terrigal High School on Thursday 1 April 2021 at Terrigal. The boys began the game shaky and conceded a goal within the first few minutes. This was not the ideal start, however they managed to weather the storm and provided a strong showing for the remainder of the half. A second goal unfortunately came just before the half time whistle and the boys went in down 2-0.

Midway through the second half Mitchell Ryan scored from a free kick to make the score 3-1, however, that is where the positives ended, with the flood gates opening and Terrigal eventually running away with an 8-1 victory. The game was played in high spirits and the boys represented the school with pride and sportsmanship. The Opens Team will move their focus to Futsal in Week 2 of Term 2. The boys are to be congratulated on their achievements.
