Student Services

Term 1 has been a hive of activity in Student Services as we welcome our new Year 7 students and continue to offer wellbeing support across the school community.

Learning Support

We welcome two new SLSOs (Student Learning Support Officers) to our Student Services Team. Olivia Walton and Owen Griffiths join Lesley Coote and Darnell Jenkins, in supporting our students with their learning and engagement in the classroom. These staff work under the guidance of Ms Janelle Wilkinson (Learning and Support Teacher). Ms Helen Lamont is our specialist Year 7 and 10 LaST (Learning and Support Teacher). She is working with as many students as possible on Monday and Tuesday only.

Extensive assessment task and homework support is available for all Year 11 and 12 students through supervised study sessions in the library. This occurs every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon.

Social Support Groups

  • Chaplaincy Programs
Melanie Gould, our school chaplain, has facilitated weekly self-esteem and resiliency groups this term. She also coordinates a Life Skills Cooking class once a week for students who need a little extra support. Mel will be on maternity leave throughout Term 2. Her position will be filled by Felicity Robinson.  Some of our students may recognise Felicity as she was one of the amazing facilitators of the Year 10 Love Bites program that occurred in March.
  • Top Blokes continues to be a popular program amongst Year 9 boys. The mentors, Kevin and Dylan, are consistently giving feedback on the impressive level of engagement exhibited in the lessons. We look forward to the boys’graduation at the end of next term.
  • Backflips Against Bullying
On Friday 26 March 2021 HKHS students attended Backflips Against Bullying in the school MPC.  This program supports the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence.  All years participated in the parkour and acrobatic performance. It was a truly engaging performance enjoyed by our students. Key concepts presented were:
        - Power dynamics & resilience
        - Cyber-Bullying
        - Physical, verbal and social harassment
        - Real world consequences

Harmony Day

Harmony Day was recognised by the school during the Celebration Assembly on 9 March. Our Student Leadership Diversity Team delivered a presentation that included information with an explicit focus on the diverse range of cultures that make up our HKHS community.  Students and staff recognised the day by wearing an item of orange.  All students then participated in a 15 minute lesson to help spread awareness and celebrate cultures within the classroom.  In the theme of ‘everyone belongs,’ students contributed to our school's Harmony Day Wall displayed in the library

Information shared amongst the students included their family name, country of birth (for themselves, their parents or grandparents) and an introduction in their first language.  A huge thanks to Miss Tegan Perkins who coordinated the event.

And finally, a few reminders.

  • Please don’t forget to inform the school of any change of address or contact details, particularly phone numbers.
  • If your child develops any illness that may affect their learning, please inform your child’s Year Adviser.
