Science

The Science faculty hit the ground running this term converting lots of chemical potential energy into kinetic.

Year 7 showed maturity and enthusiasm for their start to studying Science at High School. They have learnt about the importance of safety when using the laboratories and have been introduced to the skills of working scientifically. They enjoyed some demonstrations with dry ice to develop their understanding of what makes up the solids, liquids and gases around us.

Year 8 have been learning about energy and all its forms. They have investigated how, when and where energy transforms from one form to another. Working collaboratively in groups they completed an investigation into an area of their choice and the report they produced was their first assessment task.

Year 9 have studied energy at a deeper level and after practice with their solar ovens at school they designed and produced some great heat flasks for their assessment task at home. We tested these in class to see how well the flask could reduce the heat lost from 100ml of boiling water and we were impressed with the effectiveness of what the students produced.

Year 10 students investigated motion by developing their understanding of distance, displacement, speed and velocity. They have learnt about Newton’s Laws of Motion and the application of these in the world around them. Hopefully they now understand the science behind why we wear seat belts and secure all loose items including pets in our cars. Their assessment task was an individual Student Research Project where they had the opportunity to investigate an area of science that is of interest to them.

Year 11 Biology students enjoyed a great day at Putty Beach rock platform where they carried out sampling techniques to measure the distribution and abundance of species, tested factors such as salinity and looked at how all the factors of an ecosystem interact, including the negative impacts of humans.

Year 12 students are well into their courses and should be spending time summarising and learning the content they have covered so far.
