Welcome Family Picnic

The importance of shared live music-making has never been more evident than at the picnic last Friday evening. After a year of virtual music, a stream of musicians welcomed the opportunity to bring their skills to the stage.

Performances included works from the classics of Bach and Bizet to Bon Jovi and Bruno Mars. Students from both Arlington and Blackhall Kalimna joined forces to create a heart-warming event with one show-stopping performance after another. For some students this was their debut performance, for others it was their first live performance in a year.

Nevertheless, for all of us, it was a reminder as to why we engage in music lessons and ensemble rehearsals… and why we endlessly and patiently practise our instruments.

In a society in which the arts are often undervalued, the palpable joy of gathering family, friends, staff and students to share music and food was clear to our wonderful community.

DP music night

Monday 15 March marked the first of the DP Music nights in which music students from Years 11 and 12 perform for each other and their families. This is an important opportunity for our students to build up their live performance recordings, a selection of which will be included in their final portfolios. Students spend years building the skill to be able to perform music at this level and they work for hours to learn specific music for this event.

Ebony began the night with a fabulous selection of lively parlour pieces on the cello, followed by Acorn whose passionate rendition of the Cesar Frank Violin Sonata blew us all away. Then came a change of pace from Max crooning the audience with classics such as ‘I’ve Got You Under My Skin’ and bringing the energy back into the room were Louis and Nick whose performance of Lenny Kravitz’ ‘Keep On Running’ had the audience bopping in their seats. Ebony then calmed the room with her interpretation of Handel’s Lascia Chio Pianga. Jake concluded the night with a soulful delivery of Steve Reich’s Electric Counterpoint and Led Zeppelin’s Rain Song.

The students brought passion, energy and fun to their performances, which made for a truly unforgettable evening.
