John Button School Prize 2020

The John Button School Prize awards the best essay on a subject concerning Australia’s future by a Victorian student. The academic writing competition run by the University of Melbourne is open each year to students under 19 who are studying in Years 10 to 12.

Late last year we had several students who were interested in writing about topics such as Australia’s population, climate change, reconciliation with Indigenous Australians, water, asylum seekers, education, health, and the state of the arts. These students should be commended for their efforts in preparing essays.

As a school we submitted two essays for consideration:

Hotham student, Hannah Soodi authored an academic paper titled - ‘Childcare reform: How gender equality and economic recovery go hand in hand.’

Hotham student, Christopher Farrell authored an academic paper titled ‘International Students in Australia: How securing the export of education is crucial to ensuring the future of Australia’s economy.’

We were incredibly pleased to recently be advised that Christopher was one of eleven shortlisted entrants. Christopher has achieved an outstanding result, demonstrating a persuasive and clearly articulated point of view supported by a range of highly considered and researched arguments. His essay was passionate and engaging.

I would like to thank Dominique Doquile  (Literacy Learning Specialist) who mentored the participating students throughout this process.

If you would like to be involved in the John Button Prize, please keep an eye on the Compass newsfeed for information later this year.

Once again – Congratulations Christopher!
