Grade 2 Home Learning Snapshot

Term 3 Week 4

Introduction

Dear Parents,

Welcome to Week 4 of Home Learning. We have been so pleased with the children's efforts and their learning this week. Thank you for your support.

Writing

In writing this week, children will be writing an information report based on an animal of their choice. In doing so, they will consolidate their knowledge of the structure and features of information texts. Part of their fact collecting process will include asking their classmates for further information on their animal over teacher led Google Meets. Students will sort the facts they have collected into categories then spend two sessions writing a draft.  On Friday they will edit their writing and upload it to Seesaw to await teacher feedback prior to creating their final copy next week.

Word Study

Students will continue to practise the codes and complete some more self-assessment on their progress with these at the end of the week. We are continuing to bootcamp Rule 4 - that a, e, o and u are The Good Guys and usually say their second name at the end of a syllable. We will continue with our live bootcamping of this during our Google Meets.

Reading

In reading this week, the students will be learning to use websites to locate information.  The websites they will access to read non-fiction information texts are:

The learning intention will be to summarise a text and find the main idea. The literacy choices will once again be Read to Self, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading and Work on Writing. Each reading activity will teach a strategy to support the skill of summarising and finding the main idea. This is a difficult skill as it requires a strong understanding (comprehension) of the text. Students will be encouraged to "back up and read" to ensure they have understood what they have read.

Maths

Our number skills game for this week is called ‘What is the question?’ Students should continue to practise this game every day before their Maths task. This game allows the student to apply their knowledge of number patterns and operations.

This week we will begin to focus on measurement. We will start with measuring length using informal units. This is to ensure students understand the principles of measurement, which are determining an appropriate starting point, choosing an appropriate unit, taking care with counting and making sure there is no overlap or gaps and the units are in a straight line. Informal unit might be hand spans, cards or blocks.

When the general principles of using units are established, then formal units (such as centimetres and metres) will be introduced.

Unit of Inquiry

This week we are beginning to find out about the adaptation process. Students will complete a hands-on Science Activity by Ms Murray. During the week they will watch short video clips about animals that explain their special features and how they help them survive.

Wellbeing

This week we will focus our reflections on positivity and appreciating the good experiences during the day. At the end of each day, students will note 3 things they are grateful for today We encourage all students (and families) to make time during their day to do one activity they love doing.
