Dear Parents,
Thank you for your continued support of our home learning program. We are very impressed by the creativity and persistence shown by our students.
Some families may be finding that their Seesaw login code has expired. Please contact your class teacher so they can send you a new one.
Please continue to get in contact with your classroom teacher if you have any concerns about your child's learning or wellbeing.
The children have been working hard on their animal informative text. Next week, they will have the choice of adding a diagram (such as a food chain flow chart) or a picture with a caption and/or labels to their text. They will write their final copy taking teacher feedback into consideration, and have the opportunity to celebrate their achievements by sharing their work on padlet for the grade 2 cohort to see.
They then have 3 days to work on presenting the same information text in a digital format, such as Book Creator (iPad app - one free book), Video News iPad app (free); Pic Collage (iPad app) or Powerpoint.
This week in reading the children will continue to learn how to summarise a text and find the main idea. The text type focus will be non-fiction information texts. Being able to summarise or find the main idea of a text requires a deep understanding of the text. Often children will recall stand out facts from a non-fiction text and so far in this unit they have done a fantastic job researching and identifying key facts as they research for their information reports. Learning how to understand what a section of a text or a whole text is mostly about is critical to comprehension. This week the children will learn two key strategies to assist them to meet this learning goal. In Read to Self and Listen to Reading, the students will learn a strategy where they point to each finger to state key details from the text and point the palm of their hand to state what the main idea is. In Read to Partner and Listen to Reading they will learn a strategy called, "Read, Cover, Remember, Retell". Where they will have to think about the text or section of text they read and say or write what the main idea was.
Students will continue to learn about Rule 4 and Rule 5 during our live bootcamps. They will use their self-assessments to help them choose which codes they want to concentrate their practice on.
We are asking the student to revise the subtraction skill they learnt last term for this week’s number game. There are two versions on the game. In version 1 student are able to practice recalling basic subtraction problems. In version 2 student can use strategies such as split or jump to solve 2 digit subtraction problems.
For the rest of the week, we will continue our focus on measurement. We will now move onto measuring using centimetres and metres. Now the principles of measurement have been established will now move onto measuring using centimetre and metres. Our learning intentions are:
This week in unit of inquiry students will explore our line of inquiry 'The relationship between habitats and their inhabitants'. They will have a chance to explore some habitats of the world through Google Earth. They will observe the features of the habitat and think critically about the adaptations that animals might need in order to survive there.
We continue to encourage families to structure their day in a way that allows for breaks, relaxation, exercise and play time.
We encourage students to think of their positive moments or identify things they are grateful for each day, as well as pass the message on by thanking others or letting those involved know that this was a happy moment in their day.
