Term 1, Week 9

Art Captains 2023

This year our Year Six Art Captains are Dora and Shemmy.

They are both fabulous creative artists and bring so much to share in our Art Program at BPS.

In her spare time Shemmy loves to draw, especially Manga style Artwork. Shemmy often shares her work and inspires others to draw too.

Dora likes to make and create as well and her favourite activities are Papier Mache, drawing and designing.

Both Shemmy and Dora make a terrific contribution in the Art room and Art program, at Assembly and taking on responsibilities to help with the day to day smooth running of the Art program. They love to share their ideas and artwork and inspire others with their creativity. A fabulous start to the term Art Captains Shemmy and Dora!

Smocks, Smocks, Smocks

Art is lots of fun but it is MESSY! 😊😊😊

Art smocks are vital to keep our clothes and uniforms protected. While most water colour paints do not stain, some food dyes and acrylic paints do. The children in Grades 2 to 6 often use Acrylic paints for the fabulous effects that they can create while using them in Art. However, it can be difficult to get the paints out of the lovely BPS sports tops, other uniforms and clothing.

Please remember to supply your children with an Art smock, clearly named which will be placed in a class tub. Smocks are readily available in various chain stores. However, a long-sleeved shirt with rolled up sleeves does offer some protection, though is not as waterproof as purpose made smocks. The students do try to be careful, but Art is a messy business.

(If children have got paint on their clothes it is usually removable by rubbing with soap and soaking in cold water.)

Art Room Activities

This term we have been busy celebrating in Artwork a shared unit with Mandarin studies…. “The Year of the Rabbit”.

Students have worked with drawing, water colours, watercolour pencils, collage and 3D Pop up cards to Welcome in 2023.

Colour

From Foundation to Year five we have been extending our working knowledge and skills within the world of colour.

Students have been learning about:

* Primary Colours

*Secondary Colours

*Colours of the Rainbow

*The Colour wheel and colour progressions

*Warm Colours and Cool Colours

*Complimentary Colours

*Mixing colours

*Shades, Tones and Tints of Colours

*Moods and associated feelings with Colours

*Using colours to create a mood, an effect or impact.

Modelling and construction

Year Sixes are busily working on and completing their Papier Mache work. As we go up the Year levels we learn to use a range of skills and build on them, combine them and work towards a multi stage artwork or piece. Year Six students have designed, researched, constructed, strengthened, done multi layers of Papier Mache, undercoated, painted, decorated and varnished their works to arrive at a 3D model of an imaginary character, animal or creature. Lots of skills, lots of messy glues and paints and fantastic end results. Well done to our Year Six Artists.

Best wishes,

Mrs D
