Classroom News Foundation

Term 1, Week 9

Dear Foundation Families,

Our first term has certainly flown by, and we could not be prouder as to how our students have settled into school life at BPS. Our students have shown growing independence and confidence, and are developing a wonderful attitude to learning. This is evident when you walk into our classrooms and ask what are you learning today?

During Reader’s Workshop sessions, students have explored different mentor texts. They have made predictions, sequenced storytelling and looked at characters and settings of books. We have used these whole class discussions to draw, write about their thinking and understanding of the texts we have read.

In Writing, our focus has been unpacking ideas from a range of inspirations. Students have used the brainstorming lessons to begin to write simple sentences. We encourage students to listen for the sound and have a go at stretching out the word. We have also be working on the conventions of forming sentences, such as a capital letter at the beginning of each sentence, finger spaces between words and a full stop at the end of the sentence. We are using cued articulation to learn our letters and sounds. We investigate the letter by listening to the sound and brainstorming words that begin with that letter. Students have enjoyed stories, songs and rhymes throughout our literacy lessons.

In Maths, our students have participated in hands on activities aimed at giving meaning to numbers. Our focus has been on building a solid foundation to counting, comparing, sequencing and visualising numbers. We are learning to subitise numbers (see a number of objects and recognise the total amount without counting) and the names and symbols that represent them.

One of the highlights of the term would have to be our weekly buddy sessions. Both Foundation and Year 6 students look forward to these sessions, and it has been lovely to watch these friendships forming.

This week we have our planning day for next term, we have an exciting term coming up with our Integrated Topic Living and Growing. We will be using the rich language experiences across our Literacy and Numeracy lessons.

Swimming and PMP programs begins next term, there will be more information to come in compass.

Kind regards,

Vicky, Louise and Kirsten
