Stories of MECS
Omlette Chef of Denmark
Productions have long been a part of the MECS tradition and, over the history of the school, have been approached in various ways.
Back when we operated three cycles in the Middle School, all students were expected to have an onstage and a backstage role. For some students this entailed learning numerous lines and participating in lengthy rehearsals. Other students preferred a walk-on, walk-off type of role. Backstage roles included sound and lighting, costuming, painting sets, sourcing props, make-up etc. For all students this was an opportunity for growth and for some it was a significant challenge.
This photo was taken during 'Omlette – Chef of Denmark'. The plot saw the Danes and the Scots competing to provide Shakespeare with the setting for his next play. The Scots went to great lengths to sabotage the Danes’ play but ultimately were not successful in winning Shakespeare’s approval. It must be said that the Danes did have some help from the Marx brothers, and some may have considered this an unfair advantage.
Throughout the play, some frequently heard Shakespearian misquotes emerged, causing further disruption to the Danes’ performance. It was uncertain how many of those misquotes were the result of the Scots’ interference. We were, however, quite convinced that the Scottish competitors were responsible for the hiding of costumes, resulting in the Danes having to perform the final scene in their pyjamas. They were also the chief suspects regarding the hiding and swapping of props.
Thankfully, regardless of the Scots’ meddling, the Danes were able to tell the story of how Omlette travelled to learn cooking secrets that would help him perfect his recipe for the cheese omelette.
It is exciting to see students with gifts in the Performing Arts have an opportunity to shine. How wonderful to be a part of a community that can celebrate the productions of the past and embrace the new approaches to these types of events.
