How do we use the Bible across the school?
It can be easy to think of Christian education as being made up of two parts; there is the ‘Christian’ part where we do Christian things, and the ‘education’ part where we do educational things. The ‘sacred’ and the ‘secular’ if you’d like. And maybe there is even a ‘Christian education’ class neatly tucked away somewhere where we teach Christian things.
However, here at MECS, we view Christian education as being about transformation. It is about the development of the whole person; their intellect, their skills, their character… head, heart and hands. Jesus is not just a Saviour, He is also a TEACHER. Jesus is not just someone who paid an admission fee, so I have a free ticket to Heaven, He is also teaching me how to be a human being. He is teaching me how to live a life, right now.
This is why we use the Bible across the school, as it is instructive for life. MECS is a scripturally infused culture.
The Bible is used:
(Transformational Education, p. 51)
As Christian educators, we share little anecdotes with our students in the morning, sharing from our faith experiences. We examine the scriptures and teach biblical literacy. When I teach something like Ancient Rome in Humanities, I get to speak about the historical life of Jesus and the rise of Christian values. I have the privilege of working with the Faith Leadership Team (Absolute legends!), which consists of 25 secondary students from Year 7-12 who have volunteered and been selected as a core group of faith leaders in the student cohort. I watch as they facilitate prayer breakfasts and discipleship groups and impact the student culture for generations to come.
It is our deep hope that the applications and practices of the Bible will not just be viewed as a prescribed curriculum, but a preferable lifestyle, one that helps students to grow and mature into the best possible versions of themselves.
