Student Celebration in the Primary School

Primary staff and students had a fantastic Student Celebration Day on Friday 24 March.  From birthday cake to sizzling sausages (with sauce please) and icy poles there was a party atmosphere and our 1970’s dress ups added a groovy element to the day!

The Whole School Assembly was great fun (more dress ups and celebration), and it was so interesting to hear from someone who was a student at MECS and is now in the Victorian Parliament. We certainly have a wonderful God who has good works planned for us to live out in serving Him and others!

Following shared birthday cake, the fun continued with games in Tribal groups, activities involving a petting Zoo (Prep and Junior Primary) and a photobooth (Middle and Senior Primary). We all contributed to painting a mural thanking God for 50 years at MECS. There is still some work to be done, but soon it will be a finished artwork we can enjoy for years to come.

For those of us who prefer quiet activities there were choices of origami and quiet music/activities in the Middle Primary Classrooms.

Our teachers were so proud of the way we worked together as a team to celebrate in a way that was a blessing to all involved.

Happy 50th MECS!

Secondary Celebrations

Last Friday our staff and students enjoyed a wonderful time of celebration for MECS’

50 Year anniversary. It was a delight to see the way in which so many students embraced the day by dressing up in the fashion of their decade of choice. The idea for the day was to celebrate our students, in particular their unique gifts, talents and interests.

To this end, following the Whole School Assembly, the Secondary School staff offered students the opportunity to participate in one of 17 electives for the day. The electives offered were based on the interest and skill set of the teachers leading them along with some thought around what the majority of students would also find interesting and enjoyable. The following electives were offered to the students:

  • 50 Years Instrumental Medley
  • Making Bioplastic (made of potato starch) and Beeswax Wraps
  • Book Club, Board Games and Chess
  • Collaborative Mosaic
  • Creative Writing and Poetry
  • Origami
  • Play in a Day (Drama)
  • Song Writing Workshop
  • Digital and Paper Scrapbooking
  • Dutch Baking
  • Embroidery, Cross Stitch, Crochet and Friendship Bracelets
  • Indonesian Cooking
  • MECS 50th Anniversary Trivia Kahoot Creation
  • Media and Documentary Team
  • Robotics and Lego
  • Step by Step Painting
  • Games/Sport across the decades

Students participated in their activity group for the majority of the day, with a large lunch break in between. At lunch students were offered free hot dogs, drinks and birthday cake. They were invited to participate in some “retro” games such as skipping, “elastics”, “marks up” footy. There was even an ATARI computer game set up in the understorey. The highlight of the lunch time events though, had to have been the dunking machine. Set up on the oval, students had the opportunity to throw a ball to hit a target that dunked their teachers in the water.

For the last 40 minutes of the day, all the secondary students gathered in the gym for a final wrap up assembly. Here they got to see photos of what all the other groups had been doing for the day including some of the items made. The “Play in a Day” drama group bravely performed their play and the instrumental group also gave a wonderful rendition of the item that they had worked on. Both these groups should be commended for performing with very little time to rehearse. The students left with a “lolly bag”. What would a party be without a lolly bag to take home? Some students also left with a special prize for the effort they put into their costumes.

Overall it was a fantastic day of celebration. We are so thankful to God for sustaining our school over the last 50 years and for the awesome community that is MECS!

On the 50th Anniversary day I had the opportunity to participate in the song writing elective. Zac V and I did a cover of River by Charlie Puth. We made our own backing track using a keyboard and a computer. We then proceeded to rewrite the song and perform it to the other students in the elective. During the lunch break we had lunch provided and had an amazing time watching the teachers get dunked, as well as playing 'marks up' with my peers and teachers. At the end of the day the Senior Secondary came back together and looked at what all the other electives had done during the day. We got to watch a drama performance and look at photos which was a fun way to end the day.
