MERCY CAMPUS NEWS

OUT AND ABOUT AT MERCY

The Year 8 Science classes began to design and conduct their own experiments. Below are images of one of their assessment tasks for the Term.

Students love the new outdoor Connect 4 and are getting into the spirit of the Easter raffle supporting Project Compassion.

DROP OFF AND PICK UP AT MERCY CAMPUS

There has been an increasing number of students running across Riverside Avenue to meet parents. This is a dangerous situation and puts students at risk.

For your child's safety, parents are reminded to enter the Mercy campus grounds from the Eleventh Street gate and depart via the Riverside Avenue gate. This is a one-way entry and exit, and the speed limit for the car park is 10km.

GRAMPIANS CAMP

Planning for the Year 8 camp to the Grampians is well underway. Please complete the parent permission form via your student’s PAM account if you haven't already. Please do this even if your child is not intending on joining us.

Ensure you note any medical or dietary information when completing the permission form.

In preparation, I suggest that as winter clothing becomes available, you start looking for some essential itemsin particular a lightweight waterproof jacket and good waterproof walking shoes.

Your child should have completed their group selection. Each student needs to list the names of up to six other students they would like to share a room with. Room groups will then be completed using this information, and this is also used for the day groups. This must be done to ensure that students get the most out of the camp experience.

If you would like to arrange a meeting to discuss any requirements for your child while on camp, please email me so we can make a time and get these meetings underway.

MERCY WORKS

We were lucky to have a local hero visit and share his story and the work he does for the children of Sunraysia. John Burfitt spoke to our Year 8 students during their Mercy Works classes about why and how he volunteers, including the interesting and difficult challenges he faces in raising awareness of the issues faced by ill children in Sunraysia.

John is the creator of Children Having An Illness Living In Sunraysia (CHAILIS).

Did you know there is very little medical assistance for children needing cancer and other specialist treatments here in Sunraysia? Many families have no other option but to travel hundreds of kilometres and hours away for treatment. Often this leaves families with no choice but to discontinue work to tend, care for, and support their child. Although their life is turned upside down, the world around them doesn’t stop. Bills need to be paid, as well as mortgages and taxes.

CHAILIS donates 100% of its donations to these families. Every dollar that you donate is guaranteed to go to someone needing your help.

John and his crew work tirelessly for our locals, teaming up with organizations and  volunteering their time to seek out and collect your generous donations. You can find John and his crew in many locations around Sunraysia. The next time you see John – recognizable by his crazy rainbow wig – say hello, and get to know this amazing man.

For more information, check out their website https://chailis.org and give their Facebook page a like.

Thank you, John. Your story is an inspiration and a wonderful reminder of how perseverance pays off.

8D THE ISLAND: SHORT STORIES PART 1

Short story writing is in full swing at the Mercy campus. Regular and consistent short story writing allows students to develop their imagination and experience real inspiration. Students created their latest stories based upon the theme ‘The Island’. Firstly, they drew a visual representation of their island, adding characters, a cave, something buried, a disaster and a lookout. Sharing ideas and following feedback from their peers, they created an entertaining short story. Students demonstrated artistic expression and, as you can see, were absolutely engaged in the task. Great writing by our awesome students.
