Year 9 Electives - Health & Physical Education

Sport

Students participate in a variety of competitive sports and social sports. The unit focuses on the development of team work, game sense and manipulative skills. Students work on their decision making and the execution of skills under pressure. Students learn to modify rules and scoring systems to allow for fair play, safety and inclusive participation. They focus on these skills through modified games, fitness activities and a variety of sports including Volleyball, Table Tennis, Hockey, Basketball and Rugby.

Social Sport

Students participate in various sports and strategy games, including Badminton, Ultimate Frisbee and Golf. Students focus on participation and social etiquette while developing and refining increasingly complex movement and manipulative skills. Students are required to analyse and evaluate the movement skills, tactics and strategies related to specific sports and learn to provide high quality feedback designed to improve performance.

It’s not just about the players.

Students explore the role of a coach and the different coaching styles. They are given the opportunity to gain experience and enhance their knowledge whilst coaching fellow students in various sports. Students also complete a coaching project and are responsible for planning, organising and running a practical session. They have the opportunity to coach various sport teams at The Lakes and be involved in the Early Years Physical Education program.

Beat the floor boards

Beat the floorboards provides students the opportunity to participate in a highly competitive environment and refine their skills and decision making under pressure. Students participate in a range of indoor and outdoor competitive sports. They will enhance their understanding of skill development by planning and facilitating a sport specific skill session. Students provide and apply feedback in order to enhance their performance in game situations. They are assessed on their physical performance, skill knowledge and tactical awareness.

Fitness for Life

In this subject, students undertake non-competitive sports and focus on fitness to maintain a healthy life. Students do this by looking at a variety of fitness activities and the impact this has on their health and well-being; identifying what types of physical activity they prefer. Students create their own fitness program and look at how to safely use weights and other gym equipment. They also are involved in a minor games unit where they are required to create a minor game for the rest of the class to participate in.

Climbing Everest

Students participate in a variety of recreational and outdoor adventure activities and develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours required for safe participation. These activities may include rock climbing, fishing, hiking, high ropes, mountain biking and camping. Students are provided with the opportunity to gain valuable leadership experience and are involved in a variety of community activities. In theory classes, students develop their understanding of a range of environmental issues and begin to examine the relationships that individuals and societies have with different outdoor environments. Climbing Everest in Year 9 is a great platform for students aspiring to pursue VET Outdoor Education, VET Sport and Recreation or VCE Outdoor and Environmental Studies.

Please note that this subject has a subject charge of $100 for activities (Correct at time of publishing)
