Orientation

Orientation – Induction - Rights and Responsibilities - Walpole Wilderness Cruise – Tree Top Walk

The Orientation program was a successful few days with new students and families being welcomed by residential staff and student council members.  The Principal's address was followed by an Induction for our new students.  The Induction gave guidance around Rights and Responsibilities and what students could expect boarding life to be like.  The following day we ventured out to the Walpole Inlet and visited the Tree Top Walk.  2020 has begun positively and students are settling into the routine of boarding life.  Well Done!

Peaceful Bay – Residential Camp

The first camp of the year is out at Peaceful Bay.  The students will be sleeping under the stars, enjoying some beach cricket, fishing, swimming and playing fox holes during the evening down at the beach.  This camp is very well attended and enjoyed by students and staff.  I will provide further information and photographs from the camp on Facebook and in the next newsletter.

GRIP Leadership

GRIP Leadership is an independent organisation that exists to train and develop leaders with a special focus on school students and the education sector. Our Student Council will be attending the GRIP Student Leadership Conference on 11 March 2020 at the Albany Entertainment Centre. The goal is that our Student Council will leave with a clear vision and solid understanding of their role as well as lots of ideas to use during their time as leaders.

After School Surfing

Information regarding after school surfing will be sent out to parents/guardians of students who have shown an interest in being involved; there will be 6 lessons and surfing will commence 26th February through to 1st April 2020.  Please be aware that the fees for surfing need to be paid prior to the commencement of lessons.  Fees will not be reimbursed if students change their mind and make-up lessons will only be provided if a weather event interferes with the schedule.  If students decide not to go on the day they will forfeit that lesson and the fees.

REACH – Installation

Leave cannot be submitted via email or text message.  Parents and students are required to download, familiarise themselves and use REACH.  Parents and students should have received their username and password.  It may have gone straight to your ‘junk’ folder and if that clears automatically it may well be gone.  If you have not received your username and log-on could you please email me kelli.gillies@education.wa.edu.au and let me know, please also include the details that you would like for REACH and we will update the system which will then send through your log in details.

SPEAKUP! APP – Anonymous Reporting

Powered by information technologists with over 40 years’ experience in hardware and software solutions, Speak UP!® is an international company that provides schools an opportunity to prevent the abuse and bullying that takes place on and off the internet.

When students anonymously report incidents through the web or phone app, they are not only helping the innocent victims of bullying and cyberbullying but they are also empowering themselves by standing up for others and for themselves. It is compulsory that all students have the App on their phone.  All students will have access to the App.

WHY IT WORKS….

Students can report an incident when:

  • They don’t want other students to know they are reporting
  • They don’t feel comfortable talking to an adult about the incident
  • They don’t know which adult to talk to
  • There isn’t an adult available
  • They want to report the incident anonymously

Tutoring and Homework Help

There is a Facebook group that you can join to access local tutor information.  Please contact the College if you would like more information regarding this.

Laundry

Our laundry staff have made a request that students take their clothing to the laundry in small lots every day rather than accumulating their washing.  Students are over-stuffing their underwear bags, which is causing multiple issues for the laundry staff.  Could parents please remind their students to be respectful of the ladies and turn their washing in the right way, socks etc and sort it into the bags provided in the laundry.  Carol and Mel do an amazing job in the laundry so all reminders to students by parents would be greatly appreciated.

Second hand clothing is available in the laundry.  Check with Carol and Mel our laundry ladies if you need to change sizes of clothing before buying anything new.  We welcome donations of the college uniform (in good condition) as students leave the College.

Clothing without name tags will be displayed on the table for collection when the laundry is staffed, otherwise it will be packed away until the following shift.  A record of lost clothing is kept in the laundry.  If students have lost an item of clothing, please report it to the laundry staff.

College Uniforms

There are second hand uniforms available in the laundry and via our Facebook group WACoA Denmark – Buy and Sell – Second-hand uniforms

Health and Well-being

The College continues to provide support to students requiring doctors and other health related appointments. Where possible these appointments are made outside of school hours to minimise disruption to the school program. For any follow up appointments with specialists the College asks parents and carers where possible to make these during school holidays.  Please contact the College if your child has any medical imaging needs before appointments are made in Albany.  When students are ill in residence the College will provide immediate care and will arrange necessary medical appointments. To minimise the spread of illness all students who are unwell are required to remain in their rooms, eat after all other students and minimise contact with other students until recovered. If students are unable to participate in the learning program for more than one day the College will contact families to discuss alternative care arrangements.

School Nurse

Rochelle Klose (above left), Community Health Nurse will be visiting the College for the first six weeks of Term 1 whilst Paula Stretton is away.
