Head of Studies

A Warm Welcome

to all new and returning students and their families. We have had a positive and productive start to the College year with our new students commencing three days earlier to take part in the orientation activities. I was able to join the students on the day excursion to the Tree Top Walk and the highly engaging and informative WOW tour (pictured below). It was a great day out getting to know our new students and I thank the 2020 Prefects for their willingness to be part of the program, providing mentoring and support.

Miss Claire Petrie is enjoying part of her well-deserved Long Service Leave this Semester by reducing her work schedule to four days a week. Mrs Emma Bridgart has picked up this day and is job sharing the Year 12 Ag Studies and Year 10 Animal Productions System classes. Emma has previously taught at the College and offers a wealth of knowledge and experience.

Connect

Connect is up and running here at the College and we encourage all students and parents to utilise this communication platform.

Check out the short video clip on Connect at https://vimeo.com/connectwa/welcome

An email has been sent to parents where they have been given their own secure login to Connect.  Connect is totally free and, because it is provided by the Department of Education, very safe.  As well as being able to log into Connect on any internet-connected device, you may also receive notices from Connect that will be sent to you as either an email or a notification on your phone.  A free app called Connect Now can be downloaded from Google Play or the Apple App Store and will let you receive Connect notices as push notifications.

If you have multiple children, you only need one login – even if your children attend different public schools. When you log into Connect you will be able to see information specific to your own child/ren.

Examples of what information you can access in Connect:

  •   Whole school or class notifications
  •   Class events
  •   Classroom learning activities
  •   Notifications from individual teachers

To register for Connect you would have received an email with your login details. Please let me know if you have not received this email.

University Information Night – ATAR Students

The College would like to extend an invite to all ATAR students to attend the University Information Night at Denmark SHS on Tuesday 25 February from 5pm to 6pm. The University of Western Australia, Edith Cowan University, Curtin University, Murdoch University and Notre Dame University will be present, providing students an opportunity to converse with the representatives about university courses, admissions, study options and other relevant information. Mr Swallow and I will be escorting the students to the event and welcome our day students to stay in residence overnight if required.

OLNA

A busy term ahead for our students with round one of OLNA testing which will take place from the 3rd to 27th of March for students who have not obtained a Level 3 in OLNA or prequalified in NAPLAN (for our Year 10 students) in Literacy and/or Numeracy. Mrs Warburton has been busy supporting our Year 12 students who are required to sit the Reading and/or Writing tests. Students can practice the online sample tests by accessing the following website:

https://assess.scsa.wa.edu.au/engine/index.php/login/olna   Username:  olna      Password:  prac14

Reading Group

Reading Group will commence this week and we encourage our day students who have received an invite to attend. The OLNA reading results from last year were quite positive and we believe the reading group contributed to this. Reading Group will take place on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 6.45 to 7.15pm in the staffroom. I thank Mrs Warburton for facilitating this program and the staff who have volunteered their time to read with the students.

Courses

Students have received the Course and Assessment Outlines for each of their subjects. Students are encouraged to review and follow the College’s Assessment Policy and complete all assessment tasks by the due date.  Your education program becomes much more difficult if you fall behind in your work.

I would also like to use this opportunity to remind parents to feel free to make contact with the teaching staff, if any concerns or queries arise. Contact can be made by email or leaving a message with the office staff.
