Student Action

Duke of Edinburgh & Junior Land Care Grant

On Friday, 22nd November 6 classes from year six and year one were called upon to plant some native plants on the hill behind 5JK and 5AF classrooms.

This event was held to educate the students about the native plants of Glen Waverley and the significance of planting trees & plants in our environment. With the onset of urbanization, there has been a noticeable decline in animals & native birds because of fewer native trees and plants. When we sow new seeds and plant new plants we make a home for these animals and give ourselves the best chance to bring them back.

This event was part of Akeria and my Duke of Edinburgh Compass Awards Program, and with the utmost support and help of Mrs Robinson, Mrs Whykes and Mrs Ashcroft.  As part of our volunteer hours Akeria and I chose this as our project for our volunteering hours.

For this project we had to apply for a government grant to invest in new plants. With the loving support & help of Mrs Robinson, we applied for a Junior Landcare Grant for $5,000 with the government which got accepted, we were very excited to hear the news.

Akeria and I would like to thank all the teachers and students who volunteered their class time and came out to help in our garden to plant new trees. Super special thanks to Mrs Robinson, Mrs Whykes and Mrs Ashcroft for all the help, guidance & support in this project.

If you come past the school in the holidays and feel like helping us out please help by tipping some water on our new trees to help them to keep on growing over a hot summer.
