MVPS Girls Softball Team

State Softball Champions

Last Wednesday, the Girls Softball Team competed at the State Softball Championships at Jells Park. We knew the competition was going to be tough, but we knew we had a very strong team who were capable of beating any team on the day. To be the best, you have to beat the best, and that’s exactly what the girls did!

We came out firing in round one against St Anthony’s PS, scoring 7 runs in the first inning. We increased the score in the second inning, winning 10-7. This was a huge relief for us all, as in past competitions we have been slow to start, often resulting in drawn games.

Our next game was against Newport Gardens PS. The team once again got the bats swinging, hitting lots of pitches into the outfield. We scored 7 runs in each innings, winning  14-2.

By now we were playing very confidently and there were plenty of home runs being scored. Our cheer squad of parents and staff were getting very excited and this motivated the girls even more. It was a very strong performance by our girls and we defeated Swan Hill PS 12-3. We were through to the State Final!

In the State Final we played Bass Valley PS, the school that beat us in the State Tee-ball Final last term. The team was disappointed to have lost that final, but they were determined to win this final. The girls knew what to expect from the opposition, but the opposition were blown away by our pitcher, Jess. She kept her nerves under control, pitching the entire game and playing her part in a number of outs. After the first inning we were up 1-0. Keeping them scoreless was a good start for us. Then we came out aggressively with the bat and base running, going up 8-0. Bass Valley then scored 2 runs, but we responded with 5 runs of our own. Going into the final fielding innings we knew we couldn’t lose so the message to the girls was to have fun. The final score was 13-2, but more importantly we were now State Softball Champions!

What an outstanding group of girls to coach! They showed such great enthusiasm and dedication to their training throughout the season, determined to beat Bass Valley. The title of State Champions was so well deserved! They showcased their strength as a team and executed the game plan perfectly. A very special thank you to Grace Lee, who helped to coach the team. You are amazing! Also a huge thank you to all of the parents that came down each week to support the team. It made such a difference!
