Junior School Report

Junior School Report

Hello and a warm welcome back to term 3 in the Junior School for both returning and new students and families!

The term has generally begun smoothly, with students and staff back in the swing of things. All students appear to be enjoying the new learning opportunities they have in the semester-based subjects they are experiencing for the first time. I hope that as students embark on these new subjects, as well as continue with their old, that they have reflected on comments made by their teachers in their reports and endeavour to grow on this and achieve their very best this semester – one day at a time, one class at a time, one hour at a time.

Looking at the school calendar, we are set for an extremely busy (and exciting!) term 3. Over the last three weeks, year 8 students have been involved with a series of Youth Mental Health First Aid sessions. These sessions are designed to assist students in recognising the signs of a mental health issue or crisis and help educate them about where they can go to get help. Our year 8 students have also participated in outreach activities run by Federation University. These activities assist students to understand the links between the skills they develop here at school and the skills that are required for careers and tertiary study. With support, students start to develop their understanding of their own strengths and weaknesses, and become aware of the opportunities that further education can present.

In addition to these sessions, we have already had students out very skillfully representing the College in a range of sports including soccer, netball and AFL and these sporting events will continue throughout the term. A group of around 20 of our year 7 and 8 students are busily working to polish and add the final finesse and flair to their roles (both on and off stage) in the college musical, Seussical Jr. I would encourage all families to support these students and attend one of the performances at 8 pm Friday 6th and Saturday 7th September.

Finally, just a few reminders. We want our school to represent our community well and one way that we do this is by requiring that full school uniform be worn. I know it can be difficult to raise teenagers and balance the pressures we all feel of modern day life, but we must continue to work together to maintain our standards. We appreciate that we are in the coldest part of the year and as such would like to remind families and students that a white long-sleeved shirt can be worn under the school shirt. Combined with the jumper and jacket this should provide ample warmth. Beanies and hats are permitted in the school yard but must not be taken to class. Lastly, Year 9 (2020) subject selection forms are now overdue and should be returned ASAP to Andrea in Middle School.

This will be the last time I compose this report, as Mr Mike Santo is back captaining the ship. I have immensely enjoyed my time supporting the Junior School in his absence and wish everyone well during this second half of the year. I hope that it is full of achievement and happiness for each and every one of you.

Warm wishes,

Nicole Taylor
