Senior School News

Welcome back Grade 5 and 6 students and families. We are so excited to be back at Sacred Heart and there is a definite positive energy in the air with our new single year level structure.

The Grade 5's have had a big focus on their 'circle of control'. They are looking at what in their life they can control, what they cannot and what actions to take (if any) when problems arise. They have spent time on setting up 'Ready to Learn' plans, identifying what being ready to learn in the classroom looks and feels like and what actions they can do to get themselves in a better position to learn. In Maths they have focussed on Statistics and Data this week, getting out in the real world, collecting data on car colours and generating their own questions. In English they have dusted off the holiday cobwebs with a recount of their adventures and setting up their book boxes. In R.E they have looked at images of God and created a class mission statement that promotes how they want to feel when in Grade 5B.

The Grade 6 students have hit the ground running as they have a jam packed term ahead of them. They have had a big focus on the topic of Health this week, in particular our mental health and the emotional literacy needed to articulate our feelings. They have been categorising feelings and comparing the different levels of intensity our emotions display. This is all in preparation for creating personalised 'Ready to Learn' plans, where they will identify actions that can assist in moving from emotional states that are less ready to learn, to a more ideal emotional state. In Maths they have been exploring the properties of prime, square and triangular numbers. In English they have written a review of an event that happened during their holidays and have had a focus on expanding their vocabulary, using a thesaurus to discover more interesting words to use in their writing. In R.E our incredible Religion Captains ran a lesson for the whole year level called "The Starfish Story". This lesson was to spread the message that everyone can make a difference in this world, even if that difference only affects one person.

The Grade 6 students will have camp towards the end of Term 1. It will run from the 27th March - 31st of March and will be held in Canberra. This camp will consolidate the learning that will happen on Australian Government. More information regarding camp will follow in the coming weeks.

We look forward to a terrific term ahead together!

Until next time,

The Senior Team.
