VTAC update

VTAC has been open for a week, and many of our Year 12s have registered already. The reminders below should help to keep everyone on track:

We encourage ALL Year 12s to register and enter a preference by Sep 27.
If you KNOW you wish to proceed with an application, pay now!
If you are unsure, calendar the payment date – and pay before then if you wish to proceed.
SEAS and scholarship applications close on Oct 12.
SEAS and scholarship applications can only be accessed AFTER entering at least one preference.
Preferences can be changed between now and mid-December (check dates relevant to you).
EXCEPTIONS to the above statement include any course for which early deadlines apply – sometimes, these are courses that simply close early, but more often they are courses for which there are additional selection requirements, such as auditions, folio presentations, interviews, selection tasks, external tests, etc.
Make sure you look for these additional requirements, calendar them, and DO them.
Look for additional scholarships not administered by VTAC. Follow any instructions given on the uni website if you wish to apply.
Remember to consider pathways and alternatives, even if your first preference feels like it is within reach. Everyone needs at least a Plan B, if not a few more letters of the alphabet!

Figuring out which way is the “right” way

We have been promoting the work of FYA here at NHS, largely because they have conducted robust research into the future of work for young people in Australia, and therefore are speaking with authority on the subject. In addition, they work closely with young people to ensure that they are hearing firsthand what they are really thinking. Right now, many of our young people may be feeling stressed as they try to decide which way they will head at the end of their Year 12 studies. The excerpts below, whilst they over-simplify the situation a little, are nonetheless worthy of reflection …

“During Year 12 I was so focused on keeping my sh*t together that I never gave any proper consideration to picking a university degree that was going to excite and inspire me. Instead I listened to everyone else around me and ended up in a degree that frustrated and challenged me, and not in a good way.

I’ve learnt that when you choose a degree that is focused around a subject or topic you love, you will have the drive and motivation to do the hard work that’s required. The same could be said for anything — work, TAFE, trade school, university, interning, volunteering. Whatever it is that you’re doing, if you love it, it isn’t a chore.

…

I’ve learnt it’s important that when you’re thinking about your next step after high school that you use all the resources available to you, rather than just taking advice from people who will do the thinking for you. If I could go back, I would jump on Google and research a variety of degrees to figure out what they’re actually all about. I’d talk to people working on jobs I think sound interesting to find out what they’re actually like and how they got there. I’d speak to careers counsellors. And I’d ask for advice from family members and friends. However, it is important to keep in mind that it’s your future — you’ll be the one rolling your tired self out of bed for it, whether it’s work, an apprenticeship, or some form of study.”

Scholarship Alert

Federation University Year 12 Scholarship

Twelve scholarships, valued at $5000 each, are awarded to students completing Year 12 in 2018 who enrol at Federation University Australia in 2019. The scholarship will be awarded based on a student’s overall academic potential, contribution to their school and community, supporting statement from the School Principal and seek to study at FedUni in 2018.

Monash Indigenous Summer Camp

From 4 - 8 December, 2018 Monash University invites Indigenous students from year 10 – 12 to participate in the Experience Monash Indigenous Summer Camp.

The 2018 summer camp aims to provide an in-depth insight into university life, while focusing on team-building, motivation, meeting new people, confidence-building, and health and wellbeing.

Australian Guild of Music Education Open Day

VCE Music Workshop in Preparation for Auditions

This free all-day workshop on Sunday 26th August is designed for Melbourne’s outstanding young string, wind, brass, and percussion players. Dedicated to helping VCE musicians prepare for their upcoming tertiary auditions, the day will comprise group warm-ups, instrument-specific masterclasses taken by the Conservatorium’s performance staff, a “behind-the-scenes” session on what an audition panel looks and listens for, tips on how to deliver your peak performance under pressure, and an exploration of the many different forms a modern career in music can take. Selected students will be invited to perform in their instrument’s masterclass with a Conservatorium accompanist.

Dance Audition Preparation Workshop

Saturday 25 & Sunday 26 August: 10.00am - 4:30pm

This two-day short course is an immersive experience, providing an insight into the audition process and a hands on experience of VCA Dance. This practical two-day workshop is designed to assist students with how best to prepare for a tertiary dance school audition.

Focusing primarily, but not exclusively, on VCA Dance, it will also provide an insight into what a tertiary dance school is looking for in a potential student through the audition process. Led by VCA Dance leaders, the workshop is held over two days in order to provide potential for development through feedback.

Prior dance experience required, equivalent to Cecchetti / RAD Intermediate, or VCE level.
