Northcote High School Writers' Festival: Growing Young Writers 2018 

Book now for this years Writers' Festival! The fantastic line up includes two of this years CBCA Book of the Year winners - Fiona Wood and Cath Crowley. In their funny and honest collaboration Take Three Girls, Fiona, Cath and co-author Simmone Howell explore themes of friendship, feminism and identity. They will be joined by action adventure writer Jack Heath and comic book maker Bernard Caleo

 

As well as lively author discussions the day will feature door prizes, author signings and books sales. 

 

 

 

 

 

NHS students will be working hard on refreshments for the day:

  • Gus and Felix will be using their barista skills at the commercial coffee machine

Year 9's #We Love Food class will be preparing a Literary Feast - look out for Harry Potter Rock Cakes and Miss Trunchbowl’s Chocolate cake!

Cath Crowley is the author of the Gracie Faltrain trilogy, Chasing Charlie DuskinGraffiti MoonRosie Staples’ Minor Magical Misunderstanding and Words in Deep Blue.  She also co-authored Take Three Girls, with Fiona Wood and Simmone Howell.

Fiona Wood is the author of young adult novels, Six Impossible ThingsWildlife and Cloudwish, and co-author of Take Three Girls with Cath Crowley and Simmone Howell.

Bernard Caleo is a comic book maker, performer and kamishibaya (kamishibai performer).  He has watched comic books develop as a storytelling art, and is very excited about the directions for comic books and graphic novels as part of book culture and visual art culture in Australia.

 

 He’s passionate about Kamishibai, the Japanese form of storytelling translated as ‘paper theatre’ and making interpretative theatre shows and performances to help audiences get the story of a place or a person or an idea.

Jack Heath is the bestselling author of more than twenty action-packed books including ReplicaThe Cut OutThe Fail Safe, and The Dangers series.  He wrote his first novel in high school, and it was published while he was still a teenager.

 

His enthusiastic presentations have gotten thousands of kids hooked on reading.

Northcote High School Poetry Slam 2018

The NHS Writers' Festival kicks off on Friday night with a poetry slam run by local poet Emilie Zoey Baker. Student teams have been training for the event but anyone is welcome to participate. Poetry slamming is fast, furious and most of all its fun. Join us for a great family night, take part or sit back and enjoy.

Young Writers’ Summit

Ever wondered what the secret is to writing a stellar short story? Author, Emily Brewin, is facilitating a writing workshop that covers the essential ingredients of micro, flash and short fiction. You will be guided through writing exercises with an aim to forming fresh ideas or the basis of your own story. You will also be issued a ‘toolkit’ of literary resources to keep you writing long after the workshop is done.

 

This event is open to all young writers’ in our community who are currently at Secondary School.   

 

1.30 – 3.30pm @ Northcote High School

Tickets: $15 for 3 hour workshop

                 $25 includes entry to Writers’ Festival on the Saturday

Author Bio:

Emily Brewin is a Melbourne-based author and educator.

 

Her first novel, Hello, Goodbye was published in 2017 by Allen & Unwin. Her second, A New Day, is due for release in February 2019.

 

She has been awarded an Australian Society of Authors Emerging Writers’ and Illustrators’ Mentorship for her fiction writing, and was recently granted a 2018 Bundanon Trust artist residency to develop her third novel, The Piano.

 

Emily's short stories have been short listed for a number of literary awards. She has also written for publications, Feminartsy, Meanjin, Kill Your Darlings, Mamamia, Shine, Metro and Screen Education magazines.
