Year 8 Girls soccer team at Donath Reserve
Our girls had a great day beating Kyneton (walkover), Melbourne Girls 2-0 and Viewbank 10-0. They then had to play off in the final against Charles Latrobe. This game was frustrating as we kicked with the wind and only scored 1 goal a minute before half time. Against a crowded defense we just couldn’t score. Into a very strong wind we ran the ball quickly into an open defence with Zoe Foggiato scoring 3 more goals. Our team led by Rosie Rodger and coached well by Year 9 students Arthur Maj and Sean Moorhead will now play off in the State finals on Tuesday 11th Sept at DISC. It is worth noting that the State convenor is ex NHS student and State champion Soccer star Rita Mankowska. Rita led many girls NHS teams to State final wins in the early 2000’s.
Our girls showed grit and determination in convincingly beating both Sacred Heart and Diamond Valley SC. Tarrah Brown and Matilda Symons both shot over 20 goals each over their 3 games. Beatrice MacDonald and Iris Bentley dominated our defense but unluckily we couldn’t control the goal shooter from Melbourne Girls who scored 17 in our only 23-16-point loss for the day. Sophie Obst of Year 9 did a great job in training and coaching the girls.
After beating Melbourne Girls by 6 goals in our first match we thought we had a good chance of winning on the day. Unfortunately we had a loss to St Helena and a narrow loss to Sacred Heart. It was still a great day with girls rotating around and also playing in various positions.
