CHINA - THE MIDDLE KINGDOM - YEARS 5 & 6

In the first semester, the Grade 5 and 6 students were introduced to China, the Middle Kingdom. To learn the language, it is important to start with the country and its rich history and diverse traditions - as they helped to build on the understanding of the language.

We had a look at the new and the old significant landmarks and places in China, and students were put into groups to recreate those places learned, with a mixture of mediums that included modelling clay, popsicle sticks, blocks, etc. When completed, group presentations were done, and we mapped them out on the map of China.

As their teacher, I am constantly amazed by their creativity and teamwork, and I look forward to working alongside them next semester with new content and learning activities.

THE DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL

Duan Wu Jie (The Dragon Boat Festival) is observed every 5th day of the 5th month of the lunar calendar, and happened to fall on the 14th of June this year.

YEARS 3-6

With the unexpected snap lockdown, we entered two weeks of remote learning, and a video was created for the students from Year 3 to 6, to learn about the festival and attempt the challenges set for this festival.

The challenges included:

1.       Creating a poem or song about the festival

2.       Creating a dragon boat

The submissions that came in were excellent, and showcased not just the students’ creativity, but also the support and involvement of their families. The LOTE team is thankful to receive such support and understanding from our Collingwood College families in the learning of the Chinese language and culture.

YEARS 7 & 8

With our high school students, the Year 7 and 8 students were introduced to the festival upon the return of onsite learning. After learning about the origin of the festival and the traditions and significance of it, the students worked on creating a diorama that contains the key information of Duan Wu Jie.

Eco-Friendly Periods for Victorian Schools Campaign - Collingwood Green Team

The campaign for "eco friendly periods for Vic schools" has been circulating around school communities in Victoria lately. Here's your opportunity to sign the petition, asking the government to provide eco-friendly period products for public schools in Victoria, instead of  disposable products that damage the environment.

https://me.getup.org.au/petitions/eco-friendly-periods-4-vic-schools-3

On average, a woman will have around 400 menstrual cycles in her lifetime. If she uses 5 tampons or pads for 5 days each month, over her lifetime she will have used 10,500 disposable products. These disposables are detrimental to the health of the earth (and are often not particularly healthy for us either).
