Term Overview

In Term 1, Grade 3 students will be learning about the following topics and skills:

Reading:

In term 1 reading, we will begin by focusing on "starting right" in the first two weeks. The main objective is to establish a solid foundation for our reading skills and to establish key learning routines. Over the term, we will delve into other crucial reading skills such as predicting, questioning, inferring, determining importance, and visualizing. By the end of the term, we aim to set the students up for a fantastic year of learning in reading!

Writing:

During Term 1, students will establish writing habits through exploring what behaviors and expectations are required for them to be successful writers. Students will utilise their Writer’s Notebook to generate writing ideas before moving onto planning, drafting and publishing a personal narrative. Throughout this process students will use the 6 + 1 traits and VCOP strategies to improve their writing skills. Students will conclude the term by working their way through the writing process to complete a piece of writing of their choice.

Mathematics:

In Mathematics, the Year 3 students will build their understanding of the structure of our math's lessons and expectations through our Starting Right Program. Students will begin with a focus on the Number and Algebra strand of the curriculum. We will explore place value, odd and even numbers and prepare for NAPLAN week 8 and 9 of this term.

We encourage students to practise counting, using Mathletics and using Maths in their everyday life to support their understanding at school.

Inquiry:

In term 1, the grade 3 students will inquire into the question "Being the Best Me I can Possibly Be". Students will work collaboratively to co-develop the expectations for the class and help identify what makes for a positive learning environment. Later in the term the students will reflect on their personal learning needs and goals. They will write a letter to their parents discussing how they have helped contribute to a positive learning environment and what goals they have set for themselves. By the end of the term the students will develop the capacity to reflect on themselves and consider goals for personal growth, develop group cooperation and discussion skills, and consider what makes a safe, respectful and trusting learning environment,

Positive Education:

At BHPS, we teach Positive Education using the P.E.R.M.A. model and Character Strengths to help students learn the competencies and skills they need to build resilience and effectively manage their emotions, behaviour and relationships with others.

During Term 1 In Positive Education, the Grade 3 students will be focusing on a character strength each week which will be outlined on our wellbeing blog: https://wellbeingforprimaryschoolstudents.edublogs.org/
