Book Club - Issue 1

Welcome back to school and to Book Club! Issue #1 has been handed out to all grades on Tuesday 7th February. All of the orders are to be made online. This means you are only able to place orders via the LOOP platform. Its super easy to use!

Every order placed gives the school reward points to purchase new books for our library. The orders can always be held at the office and not distributed to the children if they are a surprise!! 

 

Health and Physical Education

Foundation  

In Term 1, Foundation students will participate in a positive play unit. This unit is designed to teach positive and safe behaviours within the gym and when playing in the yard. Fundamental movement skills, running and jumping will be a major focus point for the term. Students will participate in a range of individual, small and large group activities that develop these skills.  

 

Grade One and Two  

In Term 1, Grade One and Two students will begin the term revising our positive play unit. Techniques of the overarm and underarm throw will be revised; power and accuracy will be introduced as the students continue to develop confidence within the movement technique. Catching will be a focus for Term 1 with students practising the skill before progressive activities are introduced. To complete the term, students will engage in the unit of dribbling by hand where hand eye coordination will be developed.  

 

Grade Three  

In Term 1, Grade Three students will participate in a striking and fielding unit. Students will participate in various games, including rounders, cricket and softball. Skills in these sports will be taught through skill-based activities and games. To finish the term, students will explore the unit ‘Invasion Games’ where students will learn strategies in attack and defence principles and how they apply to sports such as football and netball.  

 

Grade Four 

In Term 1, Grade Four students will be treated to a four-week golf program conducted by PGA professional Daniel Materazzo. Students will learn the correct techniques to putt, chip, pitch, and drive a golf ball in a safe and encouraging setting. Students will begin to prepare for the School Athletics Carnival, to be held early in Term 2. Each week a track and field event will be practiced within our PE sessions.  

 

Grade Five and Six  

In Term 1, Grade Five students will begin the term learning the skills to play basketball. Sessions will focus on dribbling, passing, shooting and game play including creating space on offence and closing space on defence. Grade Six students will begin the term learning Invasion games and how attack and defence principles can be applied to sports such as basketball and football. Grade Five and Six students will complete track and field events later in the term to prepare for the athletic carnival in Term 2.   

 

Indonesian 

Grade Two 

This term, students will begin with Starting Right activities and become familiar with classroom routines. They will revisit and build on greetings, numbers and colours before exploring vocabulary related to animals. Students will learn how to create simple informative and descriptive texts. A combination of songs, games, stories and videos will be used throughout the term to engage students and reinforce new vocabulary.  

 

Grade Three 

This term, students will begin with Starting Right activities and become familiar with classroom routines. They will learn and use vocabulary related to transport to create informative and descriptive text. Students will build on their conversation knowledge and use a variety of common phrases. A combination of songs, games, stories and videos will be used throughout the term to engage students and reinforce new vocabulary.  

 

Grade Four 

This term, students will begin with Starting Right activities and become familiar with classroom routines. They will learn and use vocabulary related to the Australian and Indonesian seasons, the months of the year and the days of the week. Students will rely on pictures and key words to support their understanding of the Indonesian language. They will use word lists and dictionaries to translate and create their own texts. A combination of songs, games, books and videos will be used throughout the term to engage students and reinforce new vocabulary.  

 

Grade Five 

This term, students will begin with Starting Right activities and become familiar with classroom routines. They will learn and use vocabulary related to rooms of the house and furniture. Students will look at distinctive styles of traditional houses in various parts of Indonesia. They will compare sounds of letters and identify differences between the Indonesian and English pronunciation. A combination of songs, games, books and videos will be used throughout the term to engage students and reinforce new vocabulary.  

 

Grade Six 

This term, students will begin with Starting Right activities and become familiar with classroom routines. They will learn and use vocabulary related to sports and activities. Students will be introduced to various verbs to talk and write about their daily routines and interests. A combination of songs, games, books and videos will be used throughout the term to engage students and reinforce new vocabulary.  

 

Art 

Foundation 

This term Foundation students will be exploring different tools of drawing. They will be experimenting with pencils, markers, chalk, wax crayons, oil and dry pastels. Students will be working on self-portraits, abstract pictures and action paintings. Basic understandings of the Elements of Art such as colour, line and shape will be taught as they engage in their activities. 

 

Grade One 

In Art, students will be drawing portraits of animals and self-portraits in the style of Pablo Picasso. They will also be exploring early historical artworks such as Lascaux Cave paintings, the Ishtar Gates and Roman mosaics. The goal is to expose students to a variety of styles and techniques, encouraging creativity and self-expression. 

 

Grade Two 

In Art this term, students will explore the art of portraiture by drawing self-portraits in the style of Sandra Silberzweig and create paintings that display tonal difference. This will allow them to learn about the elements of art and how to create unique, expressive pieces. Additionally, students will respond to the history of art by responding to early historical artworks such as the Lascaux cave paintings, the Ishtar gates, and Roman mosaics. Through this project, students will gain a deeper understanding of the art-making process and develop their own creativity and critical thinking skills. 

 

Grade Three 

In Art this term, students will explore the art of portraiture by drawing self-portraits in the style of Amedeo Modigliani and experiment with watercolour painting. This will allow them to learn about the elements of art and how to create unique, expressive pieces. Additionally, students will respond to the history of art by responding to early historical artworks such as the Lascaux cave paintings, The Ishtar Gates and Roman mosaics.  

 

Grade Four 

In Art this term, students will explore the art of portraiture by drawing oil pastel self-portraits and experiment with painting city scapes. This will allow them to learn about the elements of art and how to create unique, expressive pieces. Additionally, students will respond to the history of art by responding to early historical artworks such as the Lascaux cave paintings, the Ishtar gates, and Roman mosaics.  

 

Grade Five 

In Art this term, students will be exploring depth by drawing pictures using both one-point and two-point perspective. Students will also be designing and painting mandalas. This will allow them to learn about the elements of art and how to create unique, expressive pieces. Additionally, students will respond to the history of art by responding to early historical artworks such as the Lascaux cave paintings, the Ishtar gates, and Roman mosaics. Through this project, students will gain a deeper understanding of the art-making process and develop their own creativity and critical thinking skills. 

 

Grade Six 

In Art this term, students will explore the art of portraiture by drawing self-portraits in the style of Manga and Basquiat. This will allow them to learn about the elements of art and how to create unique, expressive pieces. Also, students will respond to the history of art by responding to early historical artworks such as the Lascaux cave paintings, the Ishtar gates and Roman mosaics. Through this project, students will gain a deeper understanding of the art-making process and develop their own creativity and critical thinking skills. 

 

STEM 

Foundation 

This term students will be learning about the routines of the STEM room and out in the Edible Garden. They will be taking part in scavenger hunt activities about our local plants and animals. Students will further explore the garden by learning about what they can compost, harvesting their sunflower seeds and learning more about our chickens.  

  

Grade One and Two 

This term, students will focus on organisation in the STEM room, including looking after the materials and cleaning up. Students will also be out in the garden learning about the garden rules and noticing the changes in the environment around them. They will also be finding out about the type of frogs in their local area, their life cycle and what they need to live. Using this knowledge students will be developing their own board game based around a frog catapult. 

  

Grade Three and Four 

This term students begin by designing and creating their own STEM front cover, using their knowledge of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. Students will be outside exploring the garden, reviewing the garden rules and creating mandalas. They will then participate in a unit learning about parts of a plant, their life cycles and propagation. 

  

Grade Five and Six 

This term, students will work on various activities around setting routines and expectations and getting organised in the STEM room. They will be out in the garden investigating the changes over the Summer and creating art pieces using natural materials. Students will be learning about basic botany including exploring life cycles of plants and learning about native plants from around Barwon Heads.
