Reading:
The first term of the year will see students strengthening their comprehension strategies in Reading. Students will focus on reading behaviours, setting goals, connections, questioning, and media and digital literacy. As part of the daily reading program, students will complete entry models and engage in deeper discussions about texts in class. Independent reading and 'free reading for enjoyment' will also be encouraged.
Writing:
In this term, our primary focus will be on the Writer's Notebook and Narrative Writing, with weekly spelling and handwriting exercises added. Students will go through the full writing process, starting with planning, then drafting, revising, editing, and finally publishing. The curriculum will also include dictation exercises to enhance their language abilities. By the end of the term, students will have a clear understanding of the writing process, improved spelling and handwriting skills, and a comprehensive knowledge of both the Writer's Notebook and Narrative Writing.
Maths:
The first term will kickstart students' mathematical journey with the 'Starting Right' program. Here, students will focus on developing the behaviours and mindsets of successful mathematicians. They will reinforce their understanding of place value with whole numbers and decimals, delve into the four operations, developing an understanding of inverse relationships.
Inquiry:
During the first term of the academic year, students will delve into the concept of leadership and what makes a leader worth following. Through this inquiry, students will explore the character strengths of past and present leaders, current leadership issues, and their own potential as leaders. By engaging in planning and implementing leadership goals, students will enhance their knowledge and understanding of Civics and Citizenship, as well as Personal Capabilities.
