Term Overview:

In Term 1, Grade 5 students will be learning about the following topics and skills:

Reading:

In Reading this term, the Grade 5 students will be focusing on improving their accuracy, fluency and comprehension skills. They will explore a range of non-fiction comprehension strategies, including summarising, main idea and asking questions and complete various entry models to respond to their reading in their Reader’s Notebook. Students will be encouraged to explore new text types and genres to challenge themself and will continue to build their reading stamina by establishing strong and consistent routines during their independent reading time. Our Grade 5 students will also use a selection of mentor texts to increase their vocabulary and explore the purpose and effects of figurative language including metaphor, similes and personification.

Writing:

In Writing this term, the Grade 5 students will be focusing on generating ideas by exploring different text types in their Writers Notebook. Students will use various ways to record and expand their ideas for writing such as using their senses, mentor texts, the world around them and topics they are passionate about. They will use their generated ideas to then follow the writing cycle process which involves planning, drafting and publishing imaginative and informative texts. Students will use VCOP (Vocabulary, Connectives, Openers and Punctuation) and the 6 + 1 writing traits (word choice, sentence fluency, voice, organisation, ideas and conventions) to construct their writing pieces based on their generated ideas. They will also delve into how to write an information report by gathering information in their own words and using headings and sub-headings to structure their writing.

Maths:

In Numeracy this term, Grade 5 students will begin the year with a focus on the Number and Algebra strand of the curriculum, with a particular focus on consolidating their place value knowledge. Our place value focus will establish high expectations and learning behaviours which will form the foundation for extending our learning into Measurement and Geometry. Students will be allocated into fluid Fraction workshops which will provide a targeted focus at their point of need. They will conclude their Measurement and Geometry learning by investigating shapes, looking specifically at location, enlargement, and transformation.

Inquiry:

In Inquiry this term, students will be exploring the key question ‘How do places, people and culture differ across the world?’ Students will build their understanding of the concept of interconnection between people and environments and examine how environmental characteristics such as climate and landforms influence the way humans exist in the space. In turn, they will also explore how the impact of human actions influence the environmental characteristics of places.  They learn that some climates produce hazards such as bushfires and floods that threaten the safety of places and gain an understanding of the application of the principles of prevention, mitigation and preparedness as ways of reducing the effects of these hazards.

Positive Education:

At BHPS, we teach Positive Education using the P.E.R.M.A. model and Character Strengths to help students learn the competencies and skills they need to build resilience and effectively manage their emotions, behaviour and relationships with others.

During Term 1 In Positive Education, the Grade 3 students will be focusing on a character strength each week which will be outlined on our wellbeing blog: https://wellbeingforprimaryschoolstudents.edublogs.org/
