Swimming sports

Last Thursday everyone enjoyed our annual swimming carnival. It was a warm day and lots of students dressed in their house colours.  Our Year 12 students had some very creative costumes.  Thanks to the VCE VM students and helpers for the fabulous BBQ, cool drinks and sweet treats. They were helping to raise money for Relay for Life.   Well done to Dargo house for winning on the day.

Year 11 Biology

Osmosis in de-shelled eggs

Students investigated the passive movement of water across a semi-permeable membrane using de-shelled raw eggs. The vitelline membrane inside the shell models the action of a cell plasma membrane.

Diffusion in agar cubes

Students investigated the effect of changing surface area to volume ratio on the rate of diffusion of acetic acid into agar cubes made with bromothymol blue acid-base indicator. The blue cubes change to yellow in places where the acetic acid diffuses across the surface. Students measured the difference between inner and outer cube length, calculated the volumes of each cube and then calculated the percentage change in volume to determine diffusion rate in a 10 minute period. This replicates how cells gain nutrients across their plasma membrane surface.

Food studies

Year 10 Food Choices students made yummy duck fat roast potatoes and salad in class today.

Year 10 Food for You students made a yummy onion pull apart from scratch.  It tasted amazing.

VET Active Volunteering students are enjoying their second week of the course.  This course supports students in recognizing the strengths they possess and how they relate to career pathways.  In the afternoon they created some competition with a team building activity, designing a sling/catapult from found items and testing their accuracy.
