Year 13 Breakfast

Yesterday morning, the College welcomed back TC’s most recent graduates for the inaugural ‘Year 13 Breakfast'. Nearly half the cohort returned to Gibney Hall to enjoy a light breakfast with their peers and TC staff, and share news about the exciting chapters awaiting them this year.

Class of ’22 Head Prefect James Watson delivered an inspiring address, and encouraged the Old Boys to continue to be part of the TC community by way of coaching, participating in retreats and taking up speaking opportunities.

We look forward to continuing to deliver this event in future years.

Year 7 World of Maths Day

“We take learning off the chalkboard and literally put it into the hands of the learners.”

Thursday saw 193 Year 7 students participate in World of Maths Day. Gibney Hall was transformed with 18 workstations, including hand-made activities to help boys solve real-life math problems. The workshop aims to encourage participation, boost confidence and spark a love of learning maths.

Yesterday, it did precisely this. Gibney Hall was a buzz of conversation, challenging questions, making pizza pies, unlocking chains, feeding mice and working out the best way for a machine to pack boxes in a warehouse. Watching every boy ‘have a go’ was the best part of the day, and even more pleasing was listening to the conversations about the problems they solved continue as they left the Hall.

We are looking forward to expanding the program for 2024.

Vapes and Vaping

I remind you of our previous communication via the College Newsletter on October, 28 2022, concerning the use of vapes and vaping products by our students In The Spirit - Issue 40 - Term 4, Week 3.

As you may recall, the College outlined how it was seeking to educate students and families regarding the negative impact of vaping on the physical and mental health and well-being of our students. At that time, we also advised the community of our decision to install vape detection devices in several areas around the College.

Since the installation of vape detectors, we have been able to closely monitor and address vaping on campus. We remain concerned about the frequency of vaping among our students. I am further disappointed to report to you that some vape detectors around the College have been vandalised, costing the College a considerable amount of money that could be better directed to educational purposes.

Vaping is a significant health and safety issue and one that the College takes very seriously. An overwhelming majority of our students demonstrate respect for the College, their own health, as well as that of their peers, by not engaging in vaping. Disappointingly, it is also clear that a small minority of students are not receiving the message concerning vaping and in some cases are working in direct opposition to the core values of our College.

I wish to make it very explicit to the College community the measures that will be taken by the College should students continue to endanger the health and safety of other students and demonstrate a lack of respect for their peers, College property and Trinity College.

If a student participates in vaping at school (or at a school sanctioned event or program) either from materials they have supplied or have been supplied by another student, he will be immediately suspended for five days. The same consequence will apply to any student found to have vandalised vape detectors. Parents will be notified and then required to attend a meeting to discuss their son’s ongoing enrolment at Trinity College. With consideration to the student, his previous behavioural record and other circumstances, a decision will be made by the Principal regarding his ongoing enrolment.

As of the publication date of this communication, any student who brings a vape and/or vaping products onto school grounds may be asked to leave Trinity College. If a student believes he has the right to put the health and safety of his peers at risk by supplying other students with vapes or vaping products, he is in fact saying that he does not match our values and is demonstrating disregard for his position at the College.

If a student is found to be supplying vapes or vaping products to other TC students, the family will be given the opportunity to withdraw their son of their own accord. If a withdrawal is not forthcoming, the College will commence the process of exclusion. The College is unequivocal in this regard.

Year 12 Respectful Relationships Guest Speakers

On Friday, 17 February David and Katie Kobler from Your Choicez presented to all our Year 12s on respectful relationships. Students found the information regarding the Five R’s of a healthy relationship and the nature of consent to be helpful when navigating and developing their relationships with others.

In addition, the information specifically targeted the Year 12s, making the presentation particularly impactful. One highlight was hearing Kate’s personal testimonial, which helped to provide insight into some of the signs to watch for regarding toxic relationships.

Finally, the presentation ended with a reminder that everyone has someone to talk to if they are struggling with a current relationship and that you are never truly alone.
