Dear Students, Parents, Carers and Families

MATHEMATICS

Did you know that there is a difference between mathematics and numeracy?

Mathematics is the study of function and pattern in number, logic, space and structure, and of randomness, chance, variability and uncertainty in data and events.

Numeracy refers to the knowledge, skills, behaviours and dispositions that students need in order to use mathematics in everyday situations.

Numeracy involves recognising and understanding the role of mathematics in the world and having the dispositions and capacities to use mathematical knowledge and skills purposefully.

The teachers have high but realistic shared expectations of all children and focus on important mathematical ideas and make the mathematical focus clear to children through the Learning Intention and Success Criteria of each lesson.  The staff structure purposeful tasks that engage children and enable different possibilities, strategies and products to emerge. The use a range of concrete materials, representations, contexts for the same concept. 

We use teachable moments as they occur and make connections to previous mathematical experiences. Each session has a Mini lesson as an introductory whole group activity to engage children and then a variety Independent practice of differentiated activities for individual and group structures within the lesson. We use a range of question types to probe and challenge children’s thinking and reasoning and encourage children to explain their mathematical thinking and ideas which forms our responsive questioning. Maramba teachers use reflection to draw out key mathematical ideas during and after the lesson and have a variety of assessment methods and modify their planning as a result of the responsive assessment. In the classroom, we are making connections with children’s method and valuing these and being interested in children’s thinking but also sharing other methods.

FRIENDS OF MARAMBA (FOM)

Friends of Maramba (FOM) is a parents, carers, grandparents, aunts and uncles committee that work together to raise money for improvements to the school community.

During the school year we organise a variety of events including: Bunnings Sausage Sizzle, Mother’s Day stall, Father’s Day stall, Canteen, Special Food days, Fetes, fundraisers and much more!
