NAPLAN

Withdrawal and Exemptions for NAPLAN Tests in March
Important Information for Parents/ Carers
The NAPLAN (National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy) period for 2023 for Year 3 and 5 students will be held earlier in the year from Wednesday the 15th March to Friday the 24th March. NAPLAN tests seek to measure student performance standards across writing, reading, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.
All students (Years 3 & 5) are expected to participate in NAPLAN tests. Students who are absent on test days, will have the opportunity to undertake the NAPLAN tests on a separate day during test week.
Support can be arranged for students with disabilities if the student uses similar support for classroom tasks. Exemptions may be granted to students with significant intellectual disabilities and to students who have been learning English for less than one year. Parental consent is required before exemptions can be granted. Students may be withdrawn from NAPLAN by the parent or carer. This is a matter of consideration by parents and carers in consultation with the school. If, after consultation, you decide to withdraw your child, you must sign a Student Withdrawal form. These forms are available at the school and must be signed by Tuesday 28th of February.
The results of the NAPLAN tests provide information for students, parents, and the school. Testing data is used to inform teaching programs leading to improved student achievement.
Later in the year you will receive your child's personal NAPLAN report. The report will describe your child's particular results from the Reading, Writing, Spelling, Language Conventions and Numeracy testing. The report will also show how your child performed in relation to Australian minimum standards.
The information you receive as a result of your child's participation in NAPLAN tests will be valuable in helping you assess your child’s progress in literacy and numeracy. You can also be assured that St Simon’s uses NAPLAN data to help inform its Teaching & Learning program.
If you have any further enquiries or queries regarding withdrawal of your child from one or more tests, please do not hesitate to contact us directly.
A reminder once again that signed Withdrawal and Exemption forms MUST be received by the school no later than Tuesday 28th of February.
