Chaplains Chat

Veronica Tirchett

This Sunday we will celebrate dads, grandfathers, coaches, mentors and ‘father figures.’ I thought I would share some thoughts and research to remind us of the significant role dads have in the life of children. Evidence clearly demonstrates the importance of fathers to the developmental health and well-being of their children.

Studies show that the cumulative effect of improved fathering can influence a number of positive outcomes across the board including:

  • Improved child development
  • Improved health outcomes
  • Improved school results
  • Improved functionality of at-risk families
  • Reduced substance abuse
  • Reduced crime
  • Reduced suicide & self-harm

Being a father can be rewarding, challenging and filled with extraordinary wonders as you share special moments with your child. Research shows that dads play a critical role in their child’s development, socially, emotionally, cognitively and physically. Spending quality one-on-one time with your child, reaps so many rewards for your child and for you. However, many dads struggle to find that time with all the pressures of work, family and friends. There is often very little time and energy left at the end of each day for play!

Why not think about setting new goals to spend more quality time with your child daily, weekly and plan for special dad dates, this can take a bit of planning, but the benefits are far reaching.   Spending time doesn’t have to mean you have to do something special, all it means is you give your child your undivided interest and attention.  When spending time with your children, try and reduce these distractions as much as possible so you can stay focused and engaged with your kids.

Fathers have a powerful impact on the social, emotional and physical well-being of children from infancy to adolescence, with lasting influences into their adult life.  Children who have an involved father are more likely to be emotionally secure, be confident to explore their surroundings, and, as they grow older, have better social connections with peers.

Hope you all have a really special day celebrating on Sunday.  I think you all do a fabulous job!  Happy Father’s Day.
