Year 10 Pastoral Guardian

As Ms Samantha Jensen mentioned last week in the News and Views, Mount Alvernia College is excited to announce that we have a partnership with School TV. This is a student wellbeing platform that provides parents/caregivers with strategies, information and discussion points to discuss difficult topics with your student. You can access School TV directly via this link. Home Page SchoolTV | Mount Alvernia College.

“Children today are exposed to more discussion about body image than children of previous generations. Parents should not obsess about their own weight issues in front of their children.” Dr Michael Carr-Gregg

As you may know, this week we celebrated all things body positive here at the College. We were diligent in raising awareness in the way people think and feel about their appearance. We also took the opportunity to celebrate our bodies – unique, diverse, strong and beautiful. A range of wonderful resources are included here: Body Image | Mount Alvernia College (schooltv.me).  I would encourage you to read through this section on School TV with your child. Together, you can watch interviews with leading specialists, as well as complete a quiz – ‘How much do you know about your body?’. For more information I would also recommend that you visit Butterfly Foundation and Kids Health

Another relevant topic at the moment we have been discussing with students is to be aware of the dangers of Vaping. According to the Alcohol and Drug Foundation (ADF), Adolescents (12-17 years of age):

- In Australia, around 14% of 12 to 17-year-olds have ever tried an e-cigarette, with around 32% of these students having used one in the past month.

- Students who had vaped most commonly reported getting the last e-cigarette they had used from friends (63%), siblings (8%) or parents (7%). Around 12% of students reported buying an e-cigarette themselves.

For relevant content to further help educate your child about the dangers of vaping, please refer to the special report on our SchoolTV site

I wish all Year 10 students the best of luck for their final assessments, cocurricular activities, SVDP sleepout and other commitments. I look forward to celebrating Cultural Festival with the Year 10 cohort. Stay resilient, focused and remain positive to continue to make the right decisions.
