WELC Report

Message from the

WELC Coordinator -

Ms Debby Morgan

Term 3 has been a very busy term.  We have had 7 new students join the Language Centre from 5 different countries (Cambodia, China, Russia, Singapore, and Vietnam).

In Melbourne, we have spent most of the term in lockdown.  Many of our students in other countries have also spent the last few months in lockdown. However, our students are to be commended for always coming on to their Teams classes and for doing their best, despite being in a bad situation. We encourage all students to look out for each other and to seek support from friends, family, and the school if they are having any difficulty.

Ludwig Wittgenstein said, “The limits of my language mean the limits of my world”.  I have to congratulate all our students who started their journey to learn the English language and, in so doing, are expanding their world and the understanding of the wider world and the people in it. WELC is a great place for us all to learn new things about how we and others do and think about things so that we can become real global citizens.

This term we have had quite a few extra-curricular activities to keep students entertained while being in lockdown.  This included watching a Circus performance online and participating in Self-Defence classes.  Students have enjoyed the varied activities and It’s been great to see all students get involved!

Many of our students have completed their subject selections for 2022 and two of our students are currently completing transition classes to prepare for their move to mainstream schools next term.  We wish them well with their future studies!

We only have 2 more weeks left of this term and we hope students continue to work hard as they complete their final assessments.

Important Dates:

17 September – end of Term 3, WELC Graduation

4 October – first day of Term 4

I hope to see everyone back at school soon!

Until then, take care.

Cooking Elective

During Term 3, students have been studying cooking as their elective.

Many of our students, both in Australia and in their home countries, are in lockdown which can make running cooking lessons difficult.  However, the students have shared a meal that they have had during the last week, which you can see below. It is interesting to see all the different meals being eaten around the world.

Do you know a dish of Vietnam consisting of a loaf of toasted bread with crispy skin, a soft intestine, and a filling inside? Yep, It is called Bánh Mì. I think it was a familiar dish for everyone. I often eat Bánh Mì with omelet and pork bologna in my breakfast. I eat it three times a week. It is very tasty with the sourness of pickles and the spiciness of chili. Omelet, pork bologna, pickles, chili, and bread were a perfect combination. It is really easy to make so you can try it.

Nita

Hi, this is my lunch from yesterday. My dad made it. I like this and it's called “ Lobsters grill”. The Lobsters were a bit small but it’s tasted so good! He’s a good cook of Asian foods. I like to eat all foods that he makes😅

Chris

This is my favorite food, red-cooked pork.

Estella

I got this one for dinner yesterday. It's a famous food in Vietnam and also in the world, " banh mi" or " Bread roll", I recommend it for breakfast, try it and you will not regret it!

Hannah

This is my favourite food for breakfast. It's name is Wonton. It is very similar to dumplings, with meat wrapped in a layer of skin. But the difference is that the skin of wanton is thinner than that of dumplings. That’s why I like it because it’s better for digestion.

Anh Nhu

This is my favorite meal.  This special food is in Ho Chi Minh city.

Dylan

This is my lunch for today. I like to eat Korean noodle soup with eggs, sometimes, I like to put some prawns in my noodle.

Quynh Anh

Hi, this dish is called “nem nuong” in Vietnam and this is one of my favourite foods. The taste is delicious and fresh as a spring roll, however, I like it better than the spring roll because of the sauce.

Vadim

So, I want to send a picture of our breakfast and I want to introduce how we usually have breakfast in the morning. Every weekend we have pancakes to eat with honey, chocolate paste, or paste with nuts. It's so delicious! Especially with some kind of topping like strawberries, olives, etc. We also have tea, and in our family, we sometimes drink mountain tea (or herbal tea). You can buy it at our ski resorts and it is so delicious and sweet. If you drink this tea, your mind will clear up and you can feel relaxed.

Jacob

Every morning I have a bowl of cereal and milk for breakfast. My favourite cereal is Milo high protein. Eating breakfast is important because it gives me energy for the day.
