Magis

There has been an excellent response for the Magis Awards Breakfast and Personal Project Display next week, with about 90 people attending. The event will commence in the Thomas More Exhibition Centre with the Magis Breakfast, where the 2017 Magis Scholar Tom Paparo will be the keynote speaker.  We will then move to the Library for the awards which will include major interschool events – Da Vinci Decathlon, Creative Edge and World Scholar's Cup, the John XXIII College Public Speaking and Creative Writing Awards, and awards for both the Academic Spelling and Mental Maths Challenges.  The Year 7 and Year 8 Personal Project display will then be opened and after a brief introduction and two ‘live’ performances everyone will have the opportunity to view the 29 projects on display. The display will also be open at lunchtime, and a colourful  Personal Project guidebook will be available.

All invited competitors have  now  confirmed for  both World Scholar's Global round in Melbourne, where we will have four teams, two from Year 9 and two from Year 10. Parents are reminded that the first payment is due prior to the holidays.

Our interschool debaters excelled with a series of outstanding victories at Christchurch last Tuesday, whilst the Mooting team will compete at Notre Dame University this Saturday,  the make-up round for senior debaters will be held next Tuesday, and the third round of Mock Trials is at the Supreme Court on Thursday. Good luck to all teams and warmest thanks to the teachers, coaches and parents involved.

Photo above is the Year 11 debating team of Cullen Binet, Charlie Richards and Rory Hewson who had an excellent win against a strong Christchurch debating team last Tuesday. They, along with Kinia O’Brien from Year 12, will represent John XXIII College at the Jesuit Debating Carnival in Sydney during the coming holidays.
