McClelland College students save the day whilst on excursion!

Year 9 and 10 Technology students on an excursion to the MOTO GP at Phillip Island have set an exemplary example for the community.

Together they went to the assistance of an elderly gentleman who had a possible heart attack on the pedestrian bridge over the GP circuit as motor bikes roared underneath at 340 Kmh.

Here is their story.

EMERGENCY AT THE MOTO GRAND PRIX

There was a group of us walking across the track on a bridge and we were just talking when walking and we saw a man in front of us.  We were about two meters from him when he collapsed and hit his head on the ground.   (Pedestrian bridge.)

When we saw him fall we hurried to assist him and check if he was alright – another person came to help us but many more people just looked and kept walking.

The man who joined us told us to call 000 emergency which Riley did – after about five minutes the injured man’s friend came and told us that he had had a heart attack two months before – a few minutes later security guards arrived but just stood there and did nothing to help us.

We waited for a moment then we decided to see if we could get more help. Matt went and found two firemen who came up to help while we waited for the ambulance.

After we had the firemen on the scene, we then found some St John’s medics who came with their bags and equipment and took over from us.

We really don’t understand why so many people walked by us and didn’t stop to help – there were constantly adults walking past who looked on, seeing a group of high school students with a man on the ground and they offered no assistance.

We were glad to have been in the right place at a time when someone needed us.

Teaching staff were so impressed by the student’s swift actions that probably saved the gentleman’s life, we stopped the bus on the trip home to buy the students donuts as a reward.

(The gentleman’s friend indicated later it was related to a recent heart attack.)
