Careers News

We are starting Term 2 with lots of Careers information being sent to Year 12 students via Careers Classroom emails.  Additionally, there are several major excursions being organised to Universities, Expo and TAFE.  It is up to students to take responsibility to know what is happening by checking and reading their emails.

Events in May:

Friday 10 May                  -  UNE Open Day excursion (7:00am -3:00pm)

Tuesday 14 May             -  Parent Careers Night

                                             -  University Admissions Centre (UAC) presentation and an opportunity to talk to                                                     exhibitors from the Careers Expo.

See  the flyer attached for details.

Wednesday 15 May  - North West Regional Careers Expo at the TRECC - for students in Year 10, 11 and                                                      Year 12.   Cost is $2.

North West Regional Careers Expo

This will be attended by over 1200 students who will have the opportunity to talk to and gain information from over 65 exhibitors.  These include local employers, UAC, Universities, Colleges and TAFE.  I strongly urge parents to take up this inaugural opportunity, to not only listen to a presentation by UAC, but to speak with local employers and other exhibitors who are travelling to Tamworth to be available to students the following day.

Recent Holiday Activities

During the recent holidays, we had students participate in work experience, attend HSC revision lectures and participate in the Cochlear Autumn School of Engineering run by  Engineers Australia.  Alana Noonan and Chloe Radoll  attended this event and found it very worthwhile. They visited various universities and organisations, such as the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO), to give them an insight into various branches of engineering courses and careers.

McCarthy Chess Club in 2019

Starting on Friday May 10, the McCarthy Chess Club will recommence at lunchtimes in the AV Room, within the Library.  It will be supervised by staff members and all are welcome. Whether you are a beginner, an experienced chess player or want to learn you are invited to come along.

Overdue library books from 2018

During Term 1 of this year, students were contacted and reminded to return books borrowed from last year. This week we are beginning the process of contacting parents & guardians of students whose books have not yet been returned. The next step in the process is sending home an account for the cost of the book.  Cooperation of parents and guardians in this matter is appreciated.

Library Displays

Thanks to the creative members of the library staff for the ever-changing displays in the library.

World Book Online

The Catholic School Office has now subscribed to World Book Online for all staff and students to use.  It is on the Library page of the McCarthy site which can be found by opening the McCarthy Library (Oliver) link.

Europe 2020

Planning is underway for the excited 18 students and some parents who will be travelling to Europe in April next year.  I have been in touch with Academy Travel who are busy booking our hotels at the moment. We will be commemorating Anzac Day on the Western Front and  Easter next year will be spent in Germany.  It will be fascinating to see how another culture celebrates Easter with their unique customs, foods and practices.

It is not too late for anyone to join us.  Please email me for information, sbarrett@arm.catholic.edu.au.
