Library Corner

The refreshed library space is open for business! We are thrilled with our brand new circulation desk, offices, wall display, and photocopy room. However, our new entrance is the most exciting development, as it has opened and brightened up the front of the library and communicates what a welcoming and inclusive space we are for the staff and students at GEC. We encourage everyone in the school community to come and take a peek!

The Book Club continues to grow and thrive. Our first meeting this term had 60 students in attendance! That’s 60 students willing to spend their lunchtime discussing their love of reading! This week we are also heading out on an excursion to Readings Kids (one of the best young adult bookshops in Australia) so that the members of Book Club can each choose two books for the library collection. This is a great reward for the students who make the effort to read widely, broaden their horizons through literature, and chat about these experiences with their peers during our fortnightly meetings.

The Library Monitors have been working hard as always, and just before the holidays we announced our Term 1 MVPs - Anaelle (7B) and Abigail (10B). Congratulations and a very big thank you to these students for their efforts in helping to loan books at lunchtime, keeping the space neat and tidy, and assisting other students in the library.

Plans are already underway for CBCA Book Week next term, and we encourage any students to get in touch if they would like to suggest authors to visit during our celebrations. With our Librarian Ms Karys McEwen recently being nominated as the Vice President of the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) Victorian branch, we are going to be celebrating big this year! Alongside author visits we will have a number of competitions, displays, events and workshops in the library and throughout the school. It is something to look forward to!

Ms Megan Gatt, our Library Technician, created a beautiful book & poster display to commemorate ANZAC Day earlier this term, with many of the items being loaned by students who wanted to learn more information about this important day.

It seems very far away… but we have already started thinking about 2019 booklists. To that effect, we would welcome any feedback from our school community about their past experiences with our booklists at GEC. Please head to https://goo.gl/forms/pQaMp573OdbFS3Z42 to fill out the survey (this is also available through the Library page of the GEC Hub), or email kam@gec.vic.edu.au with any comments or suggestions.

We hope everyone has hit the ground running in term 2, and don’t forget: your friendly library team is always here to help!
